Chapter 31: Bjorn
Overview
Shaken by the massacre, Bjorn turns his rage on Snorri and tries to kill him for both the recent slaughter and his mother's supposed murder. The confrontation changes when Saga reveals she is alive, confirms her long-hidden alliance with Harald, and declares that Snorri's rise fulfilled only part of her prophecy. By ordering Bjorn to challenge Snorri, Saga turns the prophecy into a threat against the new king and pushes the story toward a direct struggle for power.
Summary
Bjorn turns away from the slaughter at sea, horrified by the dead and by the fact that he used his bond with Freya to force her to unleash Hel's power. He blames Snorri for the massacre, accusing him of valuing his crown and destiny over everyone else's lives, then chases him across the small island and beats him down.
With his boot on Snorri's chest, Bjorn says Snorri's new kingship will be short-lived and accuses him of having tried to kill Bjorn's mother years earlier. Snorri insists Harald has deceived Bjorn, denies harming Saga, and claims he found her cabin burned, found a body he believed was hers, and went to war with Harald to recover Bjorn. Bjorn rejects the explanation as lies and prepares to kill him.
Freya runs after them and begs Bjorn to stop, but Bjorn orders her away because he does not want her blamed for Snorri's death. When Freya continues pleading, Bjorn asks Tora to restrain her, and Tora forces Freya to the ground while Snorri keeps protesting his innocence and his love for Saga and Bjorn.
As Bjorn calls his axe to finish the execution, Saga's voice stops him. She reveals herself alive, forcing Bjorn to lift his foot from Snorri's chest. Snorri is stunned, saying he saw her body, but Saga answers that he burned another woman to support his lies, and that she escaped with Bjorn and fled to Harald, who has spent the intervening years helping her pursue vengeance.
Snorri tries to deny her accusation, but Saga cuts him off, insisting that both she and Bjorn know what they saw. Freya continues to beg for mercy, but Saga declares that Snorri's crimes have earned him death and justice at last. When Snorri protests that this is not the fate Saga foretold, she explains that her prophecy only said the one who controlled Freya's fate would unite Skaland, which Snorri accomplished by using Freya's name to make himself king. She then turns the prophecy against him by telling Bjorn to challenge Snorri, making clear that Snorri's crown will not last.
