Chapter 6
Overview
Luzia’s kitchen drudgery and memories of burnings sharpen her resolve to pursue her “milagritos” despite the risks Hualit warned about. At Valentina’s gathering, Luzia escalates her performance beyond the repaired goblet, forcing the guests to clap and fueling stronger magic.
She makes the candle flames leap, accidentally setting Don Marius’s sleeve on fire, then plunges the room into darkness before the illusion of danger is restored. While the guests treat it as thrilling entertainment, a red-bearded noble watches Luzia with cold, predatory interest, hinting her power has attracted serious scrutiny.
Summary
Back at Casa Ordoño, Luzia works in the kitchen with Águeda, preparing game birds over the fire. As she turns the heavy spit and watches the birds transform, her thoughts turn to people burned for heresy and to her own family history, and she measures her exhaustion against her hunger for comfort and something more.
That night, after the meal is served, Luzia goes upstairs to where Valentina is entertaining guests and performs again, shattering and restoring a goblet to delighted reactions. Emboldened by the applause and determined to enjoy whatever advantage her “milagritos” bring, Luzia demands the guests clap before she performs, using their rhythm to cover her louder spellwork.
A red-bearded man in the corner interrupts and challenges her to do more, openly doubting that someone like Luzia could hold real power. Luzia considers retreating into obedience, hearing Hualit’s warning in her mind, but chooses ambition instead and commands the room to clap, asserting a temporary authority over nobles who want to be entertained.
Using a familiar warning song, Luzia pushes the magic further: the candle flames surge high enough to alarm the room, and Don Marius’s sleeve catches fire before Valentina throws water to put it out. Luzia then sings again and snuffs the candles, plunging the guests into darkness, heightening their fear and excitement.
When Valentina relights the room, the guests laugh it off as thrilling danger safely contained, and Valentina looks shaken but delighted. The red-bearded man, however, remains silent and watchful, staring at Luzia like a predator, signaling that her display has drawn sharper, more dangerous attention.
