Chapter 9
Overview
Hualit admits she maneuvered Luzia into Víctor de Paredes’s orbit because Antonio Pérez’s spy has already marked Luzia, and Pérez is staging a miracle tournament at La Casilla to regain the king’s favor. She reveals her own reinvention as “Catalina” and implies Víctor can rewrite Luzia’s identity into an “Old Christian” name to make her presentable at court.
On the way home, Víctor and Santángel plot how to force Luzia into Pérez’s contest despite the risks, with Víctor treating Luzia as a tool to win influence and titles. Víctor orders Santángel to train Luzia to victory and, for the first time in centuries, tempts Santángel with a concrete promise: freedom if Luzia succeeds.
Summary
In Víctor de Paredes’s courtyard, Luzia demands to know why Santángel wants her “presentable” and what Víctor intends. Hualit, shaken, drinks heavily and finally explains that Santángel is Guillén Santángel, a longtime member of the De Paredes household. Pressed, Hualit admits she brought Luzia because Luzia’s growing reputation would have drawn Víctor—or someone else—sooner or later.
Hualit warns that the red-bearded man at Casa Ordoño was a spy for Antonio Pérez, the king’s former secretary, and that Luzia’s accidental display of power has put her in dangerous sightlines. Pérez is hosting a torneo at La Casilla to produce a “holy champion” for the king, and miracles are now political currency. Luzia realizes the stakes reach the court and accepts wine as she absorbs that her life may no longer be her own.
Luzia confronts Hualit for engineering the situation: telling her to stop doing milagritos while expecting Luzia to disobey, effectively forcing a crisis that would make Luzia valuable to powerful patrons. Hualit insists the arrangement is necessary for them both and demands Luzia start calling her Catalina, Señora de Castro de Oro. She reveals the cost of remaking a past and a name, and implies Víctor can provide Luzia an “Old Christian” identity if he is to present her to Pérez.
The scene shifts to Víctor’s coach as he and Santángel discuss getting Luzia into La Casilla despite limited time and the risk of failure. Santángel doubts the court will tolerate “household magic” and warns that what Luzia does is not holy. Víctor is unmoved; he believes he can package Luzia as a blazing miracle, leverage Pérez’s desperation to regain royal favor, and turn Luzia’s victory into his own elevation in title and influence.
Santángel, unsettled by Luzia’s raw, unpredictable power and newly awakened hunger, predicts disaster and threatens to enjoy Víctor’s humiliation if the scheme collapses. Víctor makes the true demand: Santángel must train Luzia and ensure she wins Pérez’s tournament. In exchange, Víctor promises Santángel freedom from service, and Santángel is left frightened by how much he wants to believe it—while Víctor coldly concludes that if this ends badly, it will not be for him.
