Chapter 15
Overview
Jet confronts Luke for the Mason Construction employee list, but while helping with Cameron’s medicine she spots texts on Luke’s phone that undermine Luke and Sophia’s alibis from the night of the attack. Jet and Billy leave convinced Luke and Sophia lied about being together at home, raising them as more serious suspects. Without the list, Jet pivots to an alternate lead—Henry, JJ’s brother—but the visit ends abruptly when someone answers the door pointing a gun at Jet.
Summary
Jet and Billy go to Luke and Sophia’s house to demand the Mason Construction employee list “ASAP,” but Luke is distracted by Cameron’s nonstop screaming and teething. Jet presses Luke to go to the office immediately, while Luke insists he will send the list later.
Luke asks Jet to unlock his phone and find a text from Sophia about Cameron’s Tylenol dosage. While scrolling, Jet notices timing inconsistencies: Sophia appears to have texted Luke during a period when Sophia claimed her phone had been left at the Masons’ house, and another message—“Call me”—was sent at 10:52 p.m. on the night of Jet’s attack, contradicting Luke and Sophia’s claim they were together at home. Jet silently signals Billy that something is wrong but avoids confronting Luke there.
Jet and Billy leave, and Jet explains what she saw: Luke and Sophia’s statements don’t match the phone records, meaning at least one of them was not home during the attack window and both likely lied about it. Jet remains frustrated because the delayed employee list blocks her plan to interview workers connected to the North Street foundations and the distinctive hammer.
Needing another way forward, Jet decides to visit Henry, JJ’s younger brother and a Mason Construction worker (or former worker), hoping he can identify employees or contractors tied to North Street and anyone with motives against Jet or her family. Jet reassures Billy that JJ isn’t there because he skipped town.
At Henry’s small house, Jet hears a TV inside and knocks repeatedly until the door suddenly opens. The chapter ends with a gun aimed directly at Jet’s face, finger on the trigger.
