Chapter 27

Overview

Jet and Billy step away from the investigation for a rare, quiet night, even as Billy risks his job when Allison confronts him about missed shifts. Walking to The Green, they share vulnerable truths about Jet’s broken engagement to JJ and both admit dreams of leaving Woodstock.

Billy frames life as finding “your person,” deepening the emotional stakes between them as Jet’s time runs out. The chapter ends with the pair laughing together and Jet going to bed smiling, choosing connection over clues for one night.

Summary

At the bar, Jet finds Andrew Smith passed out at a corner table. Billy quietly returns Andrew’s keys to his jacket pocket and leaves a glass of water beside him for when he wakes.

Allison, Billy’s boss, confronts Billy for missing shifts after claiming he was sick and warns she may replace him if he is unreliable. Billy apologizes but says he has something more important, then ushers Jet out, implying the choice is his, not just for Jet’s sake.

Instead of continuing to comb through Emily and Nina’s messages or confronting Jet’s mother about what Emily overheard, Jet asks Billy to simply walk. They head to The Green, noticing the late-autumn night and the remnants of the Halloween Fair.

Under the trees, Jet catches a falling amber leaf and insists Billy keep it for luck. They lie in the wet grass and, when Billy tries to steer the conversation back to the “secret,” Jet asks to stop talking about the case and talk about anything else.

Jet answers Billy’s question about why she didn’t want to marry JJ: JJ loved an idealized “best” version of Jet, and Jet feared getting stuck in Woodstock and becoming like her parents or like Luke and Sophia. Jet admits she fantasized about leaving and just living, while Billy says he has also wanted to leave but always had something keeping him there; he concludes that life might be about finding “your person” who truly loves you back.

Jet points out a frog-shaped constellation, and the moment turns playful; a small mistake about Jet’s missing hand sets them both into uncontrollable laughter. They part for the night still laughing, and Jet lies awake in bed smiling, calling “Good night, Billy,” before he answers back.
