Chapter 1

Overview

At the Halloween Fair, Jet Mason dodges her ex JJ, clashes with her brother Luke about her stalled life, and declines neighbor Billy Finney’s invitation to watch him perform. A drunken Andrew Smith attacks Billy before police break it up, reinforcing local tensions around the Mason family. That night, Jet is ambushed in her own home and beaten in the head, and Billy calls 911 in panic, convinced she has been killed.

Summary

At the Woodstock Halloween Fair, Jet Mason tries on a zombie mask and immediately runs into her ex, JJ Lim, who wants to talk. Jet shuts him down and walks away, irritated and determined not to reopen anything between them.

Jet’s brother Luke intervenes and needles her about turning down JJ’s proposal, then spars with Jet about her stalled ambitions and living at home. Luke’s wife, Sophia, attempts to smooth things over while holding their baby, Cameron, but Jet and Luke continue trading barbed comments, and Jet’s resentment toward Sophia simmers underneath their forced politeness.

Jet crosses paths with Gerry Clay and two officers, including longtime local Sergeant Jack Finney and newly appointed Chief Lou Jankowski. Gerry complains that Jack should have been chief, leaving Jack uncomfortable. Billy Finney then finds Jet and invites her to come to his bar’s live music night where he will perform; Jet declines, claiming she is busy, and Billy is visibly deflated.

A drunk Andrew Smith, dressed as a clown, confronts Jet about her family and becomes aggressive, shoving and swinging at Billy. Jack and Chief Lou quickly restrain Andrew, and Billy pleads for them not to arrest him; the officers instead have Jack escort Andrew home with a warning.

Jet returns to the Mason house, greeted by her dog, Reggie, and eats cookies Sophia left behind while doomscrolling on her phone and telling herself she has time to rebuild her life. Reggie growls, and Jet is suddenly struck from behind twice, suffering a brutal head injury as an unseen attacker beats her. A 911 call log records Billy Finney reporting Jet at 10 College Hill Road, saying she is bleeding badly and insisting she is dead.
