Overview

After an unproductive interrogation with Jack Lapsford, Anna Matheson presses FBI Agent Reginald “Reggie” Davis to arrest Lapsford, but Reggie refuses without evidence. Anna checks on Seamus Callahan, then witnesses someone slip into the lounge. In the dark, she is seized by Herb Pulaski, who drags her into the dining car, holds a knife to her throat, and demands she stop the train so he can escape.

Summary

Exiting Jack Lapsford’s room, Reginald Davis deems the interrogation pointless. Anna Matheson urges Davis to arrest Lapsford for murder and conspiracy, convinced he poisoned Judd Dodge and killed Edith Gerhardt after she saw Lapsford in the galley. Davis refuses, citing lack of admissible evidence on the moving train and says he could only arrest with proof, a confession, or by catching the killer in the act.

Davis moves on to interrogate Sal Lawrence in Room A and invites Anna to join, but Anna declines, uneasy about facing Sal. She instead walks to Car 11 and then to Seamus Callahan’s room, signaling their code knock before entering. She finds Seamus shaving; they briefly discuss Edith’s death and Anna’s conflicted feelings. Seamus offers to take the next watch, but Anna insists on continuing it herself.

Back in the corridor, Anna sees someone exit toward the lounge and, thinking fleetingly of her brother Tommy, follows. The lounge is dark and seemingly empty. As Anna crosses the car, ambient train noises and a stray piano note heighten the tension. Near the bar, a figure separates from the shadows.

Anna tries to flee, but the man grabs her, covers her mouth, and drags her into the brightly lit dining car. He snatches a steak knife from a table and presses it to her throat, threatening harm if she resists. Anna recognizes the attacker as Herb Pulaski.

With his hand still over her mouth and the knife digging into her skin, Herb whispers that he needs to get off the train immediately. He orders Anna to find a way to stop the Phoenix or he will slit her throat, leaving Anna in immediate mortal danger.
