Summary

Still reeling from Dante Wentworth’s confession about sending evidence to Aunt Retta and the revelation that Kenneth Wentworth targeted Arthur Matheson because of Kenneth’s past with Anna’s mother, Anna feels physically shaken. Dante urges a conversation, but Anna pulls away, determined to find out who else knew Kenneth’s true motive.

Anna rushes through the train to confront Sal Lawrence in Car 12, Room A. When Anna demands to know if Sal knew about Kenneth and Anna’s mother, Sal admits she had heard rumors. Pressed further, Sal says she did not know for certain that Kenneth’s heartbreak was the reason he targeted Arthur, only that Kenneth said the scheme would happen and that he needed her participation.

Anna asks why Sal joined the plot, accusing her of betrayal. Sal appears older and worn, a stark contrast to the capable, almost-sisterly figure Anna remembered. Sal first claims the situation is too complicated for Anna to understand.

Anna suggests Sal was secretly in love with Arthur Matheson, then asks if greed was the motive. Sal dismisses both, saying money was secondary and that her true motives were shame and fear. Anna challenges that explanation, citing the deaths caused by Kenneth’s actions, including Tommy.

As Sal offers no immediate explanation, Anna concludes someone else influenced Sal. She asks if Sal loved Kenneth. Sal rejects that and states she did not do it for a man. Turning to face Anna, Sal declares she did it because of a woman, implying a personal relationship or secret tied to a woman drove her to help Kenneth.
