Chapter Forty-Two
Contains spoilersOverview
Anna races toward the source of two gunshots and finds Sal dead in her compartment from a single gunshot to the forehead, Seamus’s missing revolver on the floor, and the window blown out. Convinced Dante is the killer and conspirator with Judd, Anna confronts and accuses him while Seamus restrains him. Seamus and Anna tie Dante to a chair to hold him until Chicago, after which Anna withdraws to the observation car, overwhelmed by grief and betrayal.
Summary
Anna runs through Car 11 toward the sound of gunfire, passing Reginald Davis, who is upright but injured, and signaling him to stay put. She enters Car 12 and nearly collides with Seamus Callahan, then sees Dante Wentworth emerging from Jack Lapsford’s room and confirming Lapsford is alive.
Anna rushes into Sal’s compartment, where Seamus’s revolver lies on the floor and the window is shattered. Sal sits lifeless in a swivel chair with a gunshot wound centered on her forehead; wind and snow whip through the blown-out window. Seamus retrieves his gun and offers a sheet, which Anna uses to cover Sal’s body.
Back in the corridor, Anna accuses Dante of being the killer and Judd Davis’s accomplice, citing Reggie’s stab wound, Lapsford’s frailty, and Seamus’s alibi. She alleges Dante signaled Judd to fake his death with the “pick his poison” remark, moved around the train via windows, killed Edith Gerhardt, cut Anna’s drapery cord, stole and planted Anna’s pin to frame her, stabbed Reggie, and ultimately killed Judd after Judd revealed himself.
Dante denies everything and claims Sal and Lapsford would have seen him pass; Anna counters he could have used windows, as with Herb Pulaski’s locked-room death. Seamus physically blocks Dante and forces him back to his room as Dante protests his innocence.
Inside Dante’s room, Anna questions whether his father sent him. Dante denies involvement with his father beyond coercive employment and pleads that he would never kill anyone. Anna orders Seamus to tie Dante to the chair; using their ties, they bind his wrists to the armrests despite Dante’s pleas.
After securing Dante, Anna refuses further discussion, leaves him shouting for release, and stares out at the peaceful snowbound landscape that contrasts with the violence aboard the Phoenix. Seamus apologizes and offers help; Anna asks to be left alone. She retreats to the observation car, where the accumulated grief, fear, and guilt overwhelm her.
