Chapter Fifteen
Contains spoilersOverview
Reginald “Reggie” Davis settles into an assigned room under Seamus Callahan’s watch but immediately reveals covert motives and resources. He privately confirms Anna Matheson is carrying a concealed knife, reassures her by keeping it secret, and prepares to act on a list of targets that includes the passengers. The chapter ends with Reggie crossing out Judd Dodge’s name and revealing he has a concealed gun, indicating a second firearm aboard.
Summary
Reggie reflects on discovering Anna Matheson’s strapped knife during the earlier search and decides to keep her secret, reasoning that a knife is a defensive tool and less indiscriminate than a gun. Escorted by Seamus Callahan to an empty sleeper, Reggie notes Seamus’s veteran bearing and considers Seamus a likely target because he carries a gun. After Seamus departs, Reggie assesses the comfortable compartment and resolves to remain alert per his boss’s instructions.
Reggie recalls hiding in a coach lavatory as the group earlier moved through the train, waiting until it was safe to approach them and fabricate his story. He opens his overnight case, revealing the wallet and Philadelphia-to-Baltimore ticket he had pretended were packed away, confirming his earlier lie was preplanned. Beneath them he keeps a list of six names, alphabetized, matching the current passengers except for a discrepancy: the list says Kenneth Wentworth, but only Dante Wentworth is present.
Listening for movement in the corridor, Reggie waits out the others before hearing Anna at his door. Anna thanks Reggie for not exposing her knife during the search; Reggie assures her he understands and will keep the secret. Anna promises that she and Seamus will keep him safe if he locks his door and stays inside. Reggie agrees outwardly and locks the door after she leaves but decides internally he will not stay put.
Reggie then takes a red pen and crosses out the first name on his list—Judd Dodge—acknowledging Judd’s death. Reaching under his spare shirt, he touches a concealed gun, debating whether to carry it immediately. He leaves the decision for later, satisfied to know he is armed if needed and noting that there is now another gun aboard the train.
