Chapter Twelve
Contains spoilersOverview
Dante refuses to stop the Phoenix and needles the conspirators as tensions spike. Herb Pulaski attempts a desperate jump but Anna talks him down and forces everyone back to the lounge under Seamus Callahan’s armed supervision. After Dante serves martinis, Jack Lapsford fakes a heart attack to try to force a stop, but moments later Judd Dodge truly collapses, foaming blood, and dies on the floor. The group recognizes this is not a ploy: Judd is dead.
Summary
In the baggage car, Dante Wentworth brushes off the group’s outrage over his order to continue nonstop to Chicago, provoking Jack Lapsford, Judd Dodge, Herb Pulaski, Sally Lawrence, and Edith Gerhardt. Lapsford threatens violence, prompting Anna and Seamus Callahan to assert control; Seamus reveals a revolver to keep the group calm.
Herb bolts to the baggage-car cargo doors, throws them open to the freezing night, and declares he will jump. Anna counters with cold calculations about the Phoenix’s speed, the lethal risk of the wheels, likely injuries, and the isolation outside. When she pointedly offers to push him, Herb panics and retreats. Anna shuts the doors and orders everyone back to the first-class lounge, where the silence of the empty coaches underscores their isolation.
Back in the lounge, Judd asks for a drink. Dante tends bar and mixes four gin martinis for Judd, Sal, Herb, and Lapsford, while Edith declines. The group drinks in tense quiet as another train thunders past on the parallel track, its bright windows a fleeting reminder of normalcy.
A sudden cough and moan draw attention to Lapsford, who clutches his chest and claims a heart attack. Anna examines him, finds a normal pulse and no obvious symptoms, and refuses demands to stop the train. Lapsford’s breathing steadies and he admits he faked the episode to try to force a stop.
Immediately afterward, Judd slams down his empty glass, stares blankly, and collapses. He convulses on the floor, foaming at the mouth with flecks of blood. Anna and Seamus rush to him, but after brief, agonized sounds, Judd goes still. Seamus checks for a pulse, closes Judd’s eyes, and confirms his death.
The lounge falls into shocked recognition that this is not a staged incident or part of Anna’s plan. Judd Dodge is dead, raising the stakes aboard the locked-down train.
