Lenora refuses to respond to Kit after Kit broke her treasured snow globe, and Kit repeatedly apologizes while feeling ashamed for suspecting Lenora of faking her condition or murdering Mary. Kit remembers how devastated Lenora looked when the snow globe shattered beyond repair, which deepens Kit’s guilt and makes her desperate to make amends.

At last, Lenora signals that she wants to use the typewriter. Instead of continuing her story, Lenora types that she wants to go outside, revealing that she misses it and denying that she ever told Mrs. Baker to keep her indoors. Kit immediately sees the dangers: taking Lenora outside breaks the rules, could get Kit fired, and seems physically difficult.

When Kit refuses, Lenora raises the stakes by offering to tell Kit what happened to the baby if Kit helps her. Returning to Lenora’s room, Kit confirms their bargain: Lenora will be taken outside, and in exchange Lenora will finally tell the truth.
