Chapter Sixteen
Overview
After another nightmare, Kit hears unmistakable movement in Lenora’s room and becomes convinced that someone is secretly entering the house. In the morning, evidence that the typed pages have been handled confirms Kit’s suspicions and deepens her distrust of Lenora’s version of events. When Kit forces the issue, Lenora finally reveals that a visitor has been coming to her room for many nights: Virginia.
Summary
Kit wakes from another vivid nightmare about her mother forcing pills into her mouth. Before she can settle herself, she hears the same creaking noises from Lenora’s room that disturbed her the previous night. When a shadow passes beneath the connecting door, Kit rushes in, but Lenora appears to be asleep in bed, and Kit cannot explain the sound or the movement she thought she saw.
Kit checks Lenora closely and confirms that Lenora seems genuinely asleep. Even so, Kit cannot dismiss what she heard and saw, especially after remembering the gray blur at Lenora’s window earlier. She tells herself the house or her exhaustion must be confusing her, but by morning nothing feels clearer, and the unease remains.
When Kit checks on Lenora after getting ready, she notices a new sign that someone was in the room overnight: the typed page that Kit is sure she left in the typewriter has been removed and set beside it, as if it had been read. Kit confronts Lenora and asks whether someone entered the room. Lenora first responds indirectly, asking about Kit’s poor sleep and suggesting that the wind makes strange noises.
Lenora’s evasiveness makes Kit suspect that Lenora has been shaping or withholding parts of her story. Frustrated, Kit warns that unless Lenora tells the truth, there will be no more typing and no more story. Under pressure, Lenora finally admits that someone has been coming into her room not just last night, but for many nights. After a long hesitation, she types the visitor’s name: Virginia.
