After hearing Lenora and Archie explain why they have protected Virginia for years, Kit understands their logic but rejects it. Lenora believes Virginia meant to kill only their father, that their mother died as unintended collateral damage, and that Virginia’s later breakdown explains the family’s long deception. Archie and Lenora insist they have kept Virginia hidden at Hope’s End to spare her exposure and institutionalization, but Kit sees the house as a prison built from secrecy.

Kit goes upstairs to confront the bedridden woman she once knew as Lenora. She tells Virginia that she knows Virginia’s true identity and believes Virginia murdered her parents. Virginia seems neither shocked nor defensive, which only deepens Kit’s sense of betrayal. Kit realizes that although Virginia dropped hints, Virginia never trusted Kit enough to tell the full truth, and that loss of trust matters more to Kit than Virginia’s original crimes. Because of that, Kit decides she cannot stay and says goodbye.

Kit leaves without packing and stops in the kitchen to call her father near midnight. She asks if she can come home and says she cannot remain among Lenora and Virginia’s lies. Then Kit admits that she has things to tell him about her mother’s death. In a flashback, Kit remembers the night her mother begged her to leave the fentanyl pills by the bedside. Though Kit knew the rules and suspected the danger, compassion overcame protocol, and she left the bottle there. Kit now accepts that this choice helped cause her mother’s fatal overdose, and she resolves to confess the truth instead of hiding behind denial.

Kit drives toward the gate, determined to escape Hope’s End, but the gate jams partway open. As she forces it wider, she cuts her left hand on rusted iron. Carter runs up after hearing her leave and asks what is happening. Kit tells him they were wrong and reveals that the woman inside is not Lenora but Virginia. Shocked, Carter hesitates, but when Kit invites him to come with her for the night, he gets into the car. Together, Kit and Carter drive through the gate and leave Hope’s End behind.
