Chapter 50: Lyria: Parasite
Contains spoilersOverview
Lyria, Volga, and Fig reach Victra’s private escape craft amid Pandora’s chaos. An assault rips the hull, flinging Victra into open air and crashing the ship in the Cimmerian Highlands. In the wreckage, a dying Fig forces a parasitic implant into Lyria, transferring Figment and leaving Lyria with an internal, commanding voice.
Summary
As the Pandora erupts into corridor combat and evacuation, Fig detours to retrieve a backpack and a glossy black neck-mounted device. She guides Lyria and Volga toward the bridge, twice steering them away from marauders, then uses a retinal forger to access a sealed door leading to Victra Julii’s private escape system. After a Sevro hologram unlocks an armory and chute, Lyria dives first and is delivered into a lounge guarded by Sol Guards and Golds—face-to-face with Victra, who punches her.
An external assault immediately shreds the hull. Victra braces and fires out into space before being ripped away by explosive decompression, while many inside are pulped. Lyria’s chair auto-cocoons her in black gel. The craft smashes into a Martian fjord; pinned by her crash harness in a vertical wreck, Lyria frees herself. She locates Volga in another pod, and together they descend to the ground amid burning wreckage scattered across the Pyrrian Fjords of the Cimmerian Highlands.
Surveying the frigid landscape, Lyria and Volga move to a second crash section to search for survivors. Inside the shattered compartment, most pods and occupants are mangled. Lyria gathers emergency supplies, then discovers Fig alive but nearly cut in half, deliriously muttering about an Obsidian crow and heirs. Lyria calls for Volga without response and tries to comfort Fig.
Fig suddenly seizes Lyria’s wrists and violently expels a tiny metal squid that burrows into Lyria’s nostril, inflicting blinding neurological agony and strange thermal-vision flashes. As Fig convulses, an inhuman chant issues from her mouth. A voice in Lyria’s mind then declares Figment dead and claims Lyria as the new Figment, instructing her not to report for duty and promising wrath. Fig dies, leaving Lyria implanted and changed.
