Chapter 18
Overview
Jerome brings Holly the photos that let Kate and Corrie identify Christopher Stewart as the person stalking Kate across her tour. Holly’s call to Deacon Andrew Fallowes exposes that Stewart’s church may know more than it admits, and Fallowes’s failed attempt to call Stewart off shows the danger is now immediate. Instead of retreating, Stewart doubles down, resumes moving around in disguise, and forces police, security, and the press to prepare for a likely attack while Kate insists on going forward.
Summary
Holly begins the chapter by joyfully watching Jerome’s video of Barbara performing with Sista Bessie and the Dixie Crystals, then Jerome arrives in person with enlarged photos of Christopher Stewart. One photo shows Stewart at a dismissed Pennsylvania hearing with Deacon Fallowes; the other clearly places him in the audience at Kate McKay’s Iowa City appearance. Kate recognizes Stewart from the crowd, and when Holly draws bangs on the photo, Corrie says the altered image matches the Reno attacker. Because Stewart now appears to be a real and immediate threat, Holly wants his picture sent to police, the press, and social media, but Kate refuses broad publicity because she fears officials will use it as a reason to cancel her Buckeye City event. They compromise by circulating the photo to police, hotel security, the Mingo, and later tour venues.
Jerome takes copies of Stewart’s photo to Dingley Park, where Tom Atta agrees to distribute them to officers and have hotels and motels checked. While there, Jerome watches softball practice for the Guns and Hoses charity game and sees Izzy temporarily rattled by taunts from the firefighters before she settles down. Back at the hotel pool, Holly uses PeopleFinders to contact Deacon Andrew Fallowes at Real Christ Holy. During the call, Holly realizes Fallowes already knows who she is, and she directly links Stewart to the bleach attack on Corrie and the poisoned delivery backstage. Fallowes denies knowing Stewart’s whereabouts, but Holly warns him that if Stewart hurts Kate or anyone else, the trail will lead back to the church and to Fallowes himself.
Holly’s warning immediately triggers panic on Fallowes’s side. He calls Christopher Stewart and tells him the authorities now know his identity, have his Iowa City photo, and will likely circulate it to police and hotels. Fallowes orders Stewart to abandon the mission and come home, but Stewart refuses. Resentful of the church’s control and determined to kill Kate in Buckeye City, Stewart threatens to blame both Fallowes and Pastor Jim if he is left without help. He demands that Fallowes find several abandoned buildings near the Garden City Plaza where he can hide until Kate’s appearance, then hangs up after ordering him to call back on a burner phone.
Stewart then returns to his hotel carefully, avoiding notice as Corrie comes back in an Uber. In his room he changes into the female disguise he calls Chrissy, putting on a lavender pantsuit, makeup, earrings, and a black wig so he can move around without matching the circulated photo. He leaves the hotel as Chrissy and heads toward Dingley Park after a passerby suggests it as a place to sit in the sun and wait. Meanwhile, Kate gives a press conference in the hotel’s Lake Room. Reporters challenge her about continuing her appearance despite both the Surrogate Juror killer and Stewart, but Kate deflects, insists security will be adequate, and publicly identifies Stewart’s connection to Real Christ Holy, putting new pressure on Fallowes and the church.
That evening, Corrie works to kill a rumor that Sista Bessie will introduce Kate at the Mingo. Holly eats dinner with Kate, then takes a call from Izzy, who praises Holly for identifying Stewart and briefly discusses the stalled Trig investigation. Holly remains unconvinced that the Surrogate Juror murders are just the work of a random madman acting for Alan Duffrey; she keeps searching for someone with a more personal motive. Later Tom reports that Real Christ Holy stonewalled him, but a Baraboo Junction clerk confirmed Stewart belongs to the church and said he had once been caught wearing girls’ clothes as a boy before the church supposedly tried to pray it away. The new information gives Holly a darker sense of Stewart’s history just as he continues moving toward violence.
