Chapter 19
Overview
Christopher Stewart finds refuge in Dingley Park's abandoned rink and discovers a decomposing young woman posed with Corinna Ashford's name, proving the surrogate killer has used the site. Believing God has guided him there, Stewart decides to wait with his gun for both Kate McKay and possibly the murderer.
At the same time, Holly visits Barbara's triumphant rehearsal at the Mingo and unknowingly meets Donald "Trig" Gibson. After the hall empties, Trig schedules a 7:17 p.m. signboard confession that will publicly connect his murders, his intended targets, and himself, tightening the convergence around Kate's event and the charity game.
Summary
Christopher Stewart, calling himself Chrissy, finally hears back from Deacon Andy Fallowes while waiting in Dingley Park with his suitcase. When Andy lists possible hiding places, Stewart realizes the abandoned hockey rink is nearby, uses the keypad's "Plumber's Code" to get inside, and settles in. Exploring with the light on his burner phone, Stewart finds a badly decomposed young woman's body laid out on the old rink floor, with the name "Corinna Ashford" in the dead girl's hand.
At the hotel, Barbara invites Holly to watch a Sista Bessie rehearsal at the Mingo. Kate enthusiastically urges Holly to go, praises Barbara's success, and promises to attend Barbara's performance later, while Corrie arrives with shirts for Kate to sign. After reminding Kate and Corrie to keep the door locked because Christopher Stewart may be disguised, Holly heads to the auditorium.
Backstage at the Mingo, Holly meets tour manager Tones Kelly and program director Donald Gibson, not knowing Gibson is Trig. Holly watches Barbara rehearse with Sista Bessie and the Dixie Crystals, and Barbara's confidence, dancing, and vocals astonish her. The rehearsal ends with a full run of "Lowtown Jazz," turning Holly's pride in Barbara into one of the chapter's few joyful moments.
Back in the rink, Stewart reads an online recap of the surrogate juror murders and understands that the dead girl was murdered in Corinna Ashford's name, not that she was the real juror. Stewart decides the surrogate killer may return either to revisit the body or dump another victim, so the rink may serve two purposes for him. Stewart keeps his loaded .32 ready for Kate McKay, for Holly and Corrie if necessary, and now possibly for the surrogate murderer too, convincing himself God has placed him there for both missions.
After the rehearsal and everyone else's departure, Trig remains alone at the Mingo and admits to himself that his crusade was never really about justice for Alan Duffrey; it became killing for its own sake. Wanting the world to know, Trig uses the Mingo signboard software to prepare a timed message naming murdered jurors and pairing the remaining targets with Kate McKay, Sista Bessie, Corrie Anderson, and Barbara Robinson, then naming Donald "Trig" Gibson as "guiltiest of all." Trig schedules the message to appear at 7:17 p.m., hoping that after Sista Bessie sings at the charity game, the crowd at the Mingo will notice the signs and understand.
Meanwhile, John Ackerly visits the Twilight Hour AA meeting in Upsala and learns that Trig was also sometimes called "Trigger" and may have used another first name, giving Holly a small but uncertain lead. Later, Barbara texts Jerome to drive Betty from the Mingo to Dingley Park for the next day's charity event, and Jerome asks John to join him. Without realizing it, more of the central players are being drawn toward the same places on the same night.
