Chapter 15
Overview
John Ackerly finally produces a useful lead on Trig, identifying him as a white, bespectacled alcoholic with a jaw scar who attended a meeting in Upsala, but the breakthrough comes too late to prevent another surrogate killing. Trig murders Aubrey Dill, then learns from a police press conference that authorities have publicly tied the name "Trig" to the recovery community, showing that the investigation is tightening around him. Holly's work guarding Kate McKay grows more alarming as Kate takes reckless risks with crowds, while Patmore's insistence on keeping Friday's charity softball game alive preserves the very opportunity Trig wants for his larger attack. Jerome and Barbara also move more decisively into new roles, one investigative and one performative.
Summary
On Monday, Izzy Jaynes and Tom Atta spend the morning on an unrelated domestic double stabbing, a reminder that regular police work keeps going even while the Surrogate Juror killer remains loose. Back at the Murrow Building, Lew Warwick tells Izzy she must spend each afternoon practicing for Friday's Guns and Hoses charity softball game, because Chief Patmore wants the event and its publicity to go forward. Izzy is furious that the State Police have effectively taken over the Trig case while she is pulled toward a sideshow, and she reports that current leads are thin: police are grinding through aliases and quietly asking around recovery circles, but no one has yet confirmed Trig's real identity.
That afternoon, John Ackerly attends a Straight Circle meeting with a specific goal: finding out whether anyone remembers a man called Trig. After talking first to Telescope and then to Cathy 2-Tone, John gets the best description yet. Cathy says Trig is a white alcoholic, medium-tall, about John's age, dressed like a businessman, wearing glasses, and marked by a scar along his jaw; she also remembers seeing him at a candlelit closed meeting in Upsala. John immediately calls Holly with the information. Elsewhere, Jerome Robinson falls deeper into researching extremist churches, becomes far more interested in that real-world investigation than in his private-eye novel, and symbolically throws his manuscript into the trash.
In Madison, Holly receives John's report while continuing to protect Kate McKay. Her anxiety spikes when Kate ignores routine security and moves to the edge of the stage to shake audience members' hands, creating a dangerous opening for an attacker. Holly hustles Kate and Corrie out through a hidden tunnel, hoping to avoid the autograph hunters, but a large crowd of eBayers is already waiting at the far exit. Later that night, Holly passes John's information, including the Upsala lead, to Izzy, although she withholds John's name until she can get his permission. After the call, Holly cannot relax because Kate's confidence now looks less like courage than recklessness.
That same Monday night, Trig goes hunting on Saloon Row with his .22, determined to keep advancing his campaign of punishment. After aborting two chances, he finds a drunk man dancing alone behind the Hoosier Bar and shoots him twice, killing him. The victim is Aubrey Dill, and Trig leaves the name of Andrew Groves, Juror 1 in the Duffrey trial, in Dill's hand to preserve the pattern of his surrogate killings. When another man briefly comes out the back door, Trig almost has to kill again to escape, but luck saves him. Driving away, Trig recognizes both that he is out of control and that part of him may want to be caught, even as he asks for a little more time.
On Tuesday morning, as Holly drives toward Chicago, Izzy calls with news of Dill's murder and vents her anger that she is still being ordered to practice for the softball game while Trig keeps killing. She presses Holly for the identity of her recovery-community source, because police need to move fast. Holly then calls John, who agrees to speak with Izzy, but he warns that law enforcement asking questions inside meetings could backfire by alerting Trig and driving him away. John adds another troubling possibility: Trig may already have relapsed and stopped attending meetings altogether. Holly refocuses on the road and on her immediate job, protecting Kate.
Elsewhere on Tuesday, Barbara's first full rehearsal for the Sista Bessie Revival Tour turns abstract nerves into reality when choreographer Frieda Ames starts drilling the moves. Barbara is initially terrified, but once the music starts and Betty Brady joins the number as Sista Bessie, Barbara is swept up in the thrill of performing with the Dixie Crystals. The feeling gives her both joy and clarity: she knows show business is not truly her world, yet she also recognizes the performance as a precious gift. Around lunchtime, Trig listens to a press conference in which Alice Patmore and Ralph Ganzinger publicly announce that the killer uses the name "Trig" and may belong to the recovery community. Although rattled, Trig concludes they still do not know his real identity, hears Patmore insist that Friday's Guns and Hoses game will proceed under heavy police protection, and decides to stop killing until then so his larger plan can stay on course.
