Holly drives Kate McKay and Corrie from Iowa City to Davenport while watching for anyone following Kate's truck. A suspicious Mustang turns out to hold enthusiastic supporters, not a threat. After lunch and Kate's swim, Holly notices that Kate is withdrawn and irritated by the itinerary changes, showing the strain beneath her public confidence.

While Kate naps, Holly sees cable news coverage of police activity at the apartment complex of Duffrey juror Ellis Finkel. She calls Jerome, who confirms little but says something about Reverend Rafferty's May calendar page has been bothering him; he sends Holly a screenshot. At Kate's Davenport event, Holly watches Kate transform from subdued private self to commanding public performer, then glances at Jerome's image and suddenly understands what is wrong with the calendar entry.

That insight is interrupted by violence. Holly tries to extract Kate and Corrie through a side exit, but autograph hunters and memorabilia dealers are already waiting there. A huge drunk man charges through the crowd with a baseball bat, screaming that Kate ruined his marriage; Holly kicks an usher's chair into his path, making him fall, then uses pepper spray while Kate and Corrie escape to the car. The police arrest the attacker, and Holly returns shaken by how close Kate came to serious injury or death.

Back at the hotel, Kate and Corrie thank Holly, but Holly is too rattled to celebrate because she now believes she may have identified the Surrogate Juror killer. When Jerome calls again, he reports that Ellis Finkel and fellow juror Jabari Wentworth died in a lovers' suicide unrelated to guilt over Duffrey's conviction. Holly then explains her deduction: the name Briggs in Rafferty's appointment book looks altered, with the killer changing an original T into a B and adding letters to hide the real name, which was likely Trig.

Holly wakes Izzy and walks her through the same evidence. Together they conclude Rafferty's killer likely disguised his own name in the calendar, and Holly makes a second leap by connecting Trig to Alan Duffrey's lawyer, Russell Grinsted, because the letters of Trig are buried in Grinsted's surname. Holly admits the solution feels almost too neat, but Izzy agrees Grinsted must be questioned hard.

In the final section, Kate's stalker is revealed to be Chris in the persona of Chrissy, wearing a wig and blending in with autograph seekers outside the venue. Chrissy learns hotel and room information from a collector named Spacer, watches Holly's quick response to the bat attack, and reports to Deacon Fallowes that Kate is still being hunted and may be easier to kill in a later city. Back in a squalid cabin, Chrissy and Chris argue internally about sin, mission, and identity before performing self-punishment to atone and recommit to murdering Kate.
