Chapter 3
Contains spoilersOverview
Logan returns to desk duty as alarming changes emerge: superdense bones, surging memory, and sharpened cognition. He conceals this while confronting guilt over the famine in therapy and with Nadine at the memorial. An anonymous warning precedes armed men converging on him at work. Logan attempts to escape but is abducted and injected.
Summary
In the early hours, Logan soaks in a scalding bath for deep, diffuse pain as Beth keeps him company before leaving for a New York conference. Later, Director Edwin Rogers assigns Logan to analyst desk duty and updates him on Soren. Nadine drops by, invites lunch, and heads to a case in Minneapolis.
At an appointment, Dr. Jeff Strand reveals Logan’s unprecedented bone density (z-score 2.75) without signs of disease, suggesting a densification cycle could explain the pain. Logan, fearing exposure and ramifications at the GPA, requests new genome sequencing and asks Strand not to share findings prematurely; Strand agrees but notes his legal duty to report anomalies.
At home, Logan unexpectedly outplays Ava at chess, perceiving many moves ahead, then discusses Miriam Ramsay and the famine’s legacy as Ava studies it in school. His concentration and recall surge—he devours books and recognizes that something in him is changing. In therapy, Aimee draws out the buried history: the Shenzhen locust vector project’s mutation, global famine, and Miriam’s death. Logan breaks down, acknowledging enduring guilt.
Logan visits the famine memorial, where Nadine quietly sits with him and suggests he could quit if the job makes him miserable. He withholds his suspicions about his enhancements, deciding to wait for genome results. That night his cognition intensifies—he reads Gödel, Escher, Bach at remarkable speed while tracking TV details, masking it as a new technique.
Back at analyst row, Logan profiles an ex-geneticist using MYSTIC, multitasking flawlessly during a call with Beth. A sudden text warns, “They know you’re changing” and urges him to leave. Spotting two armed men with predatory posture approaching his cubicle, Logan slips away, triggers a stairwell alarm exit, and reaches outside—only to be hooded, zip-tied, thrown into a vehicle, and injected.
