Chapter 15
Overview
BJ electrifies the HomeMarket crew with a rehearsal for her wrestling debut, briefly giving the chapter a communal, triumphant energy. That hope collapses when Hai and Sony try to bail out Aunt Kim: at the counter, Hai cannot bring himself to spend the money he stole from Grazina and sabotages the plan by pretending he miscounted. The failure leaves Sony devastated but prompts new honesty between the cousins, as Hai admits he dropped out of college and later returns Grazina’s money, marking a moral reversal.
Summary
At HomeMarket on a snowy evening four days before Christmas, the staff gathers after closing for BJ’s promised “show.” BJ shocks the room by delivering a convincing heavy metal performance of her wrestling entrance music, turning the little restaurant into a cheering crowd. The rehearsal confirms that BJ’s wrestling dream is real, and BJ announces that she will debut at Hairy Harry’s on January eleventh. As the mood relaxes, Maureen gives Hai an unfinished plaster R2-D2 made by Paul, a comic, awkward keepsake tied to the recent hog-killing trip.
After work, Hai bikes Sony through the cold to Bryon’s Insta-Bail for the secret plan they have prepared: using Sony’s savings and the money Hai stole from Grazina to bail Aunt Kim out of York Corrections. Sony is excited and superstitious, wearing his Union cap for luck and talking about “the generals” who govern history. Hai, however, grows more uneasy as they approach the office, because the plan depends on money he knows is not truly his to spend.
Inside the bail office, the clerk reminds them that Aunt Kim’s release will cost more than five thousand dollars including fees. Sony confidently asks Hai to produce the rest of the money, trusting both Hai’s word and Hai’s supposed college competence. Faced with the final moment of payment, Hai is overwhelmed by guilt and memories of Grazina’s vulnerability, his own rescue by her, and the theft that made this plan possible. Because Hai cannot bear to complete the betrayal, Hai deliberately places only part of the stolen cash on the counter. The clerk recounts the money and says it is still short.
Sony pleads for mercy, salutes the clerk, and tries to keep faith in the plan, but Hai stops the effort by claiming he miscounted and that he is bad at math. Outside, Sony admits he feels like a loser. In response, Hai finally tells the truth that he did not finish college but dropped out, revealing that one of his central self-protective lies is false. To comfort Sony and himself, Hai plays a sad song, and the two study an old family photo from their departure for America, which leads Sony to reflect on how loss has shaped his whole family.
Sony then tells Hai about his father’s “diamond hand,” a piece of shrapnel or gemstone embedded during the war that became both literal wound and family legend. The story shows why Sony still imagines heroism through military history and why his father remains a model of dignity for him. The failed bail attempt leaves Aunt Kim in jail, but it also deepens Hai and Sony’s bond through honesty and shared grief. By the end of the night, after returning to HomeMarket to retrieve Sony’s forgotten backpack and medication, Hai secretly puts the stolen money back into Grazina’s tin, undoing the theft he had nearly turned into a permanent betrayal.
