James moves through the darkness as fast and quietly as he can after fleeing Young George's whipping. As dawn approaches, James worries that he will not find a safe hiding place before daylight exposes him. Because it is still dark, James cannot easily distinguish human paths from animal trails, which increases the danger of being discovered.

James then hears angry men shouting nearby. While trying to stay hidden, James recognizes Huck's voice amid an argument involving Sophia, Harney, the Grangerfords, and the Shepherdsons. A young woman runs across an open field, Huck scrambles toward James's hiding place, and gunfire erupts. James reaches out, pulls Huck into the bushes, and reveals himself in a whisper.

When the shooting abruptly stops, James and Huck stand and step into the meadow. In the growing light, they find four dead bodies lying in the field. Huck is stunned by the deaths, but James immediately focuses on escape, knowing that a Black man found near dead white people would be in extreme danger.

Huck leads James away from the field, not back into the woods but down through poplar trees toward the river. There Huck reveals the reason for his excitement: their old raft has washed ashore, and Huck has repaired it by relashing the logs. The discovery gives them a way to flee at once despite the risk of traveling on the river during daylight.

After they push off, the immediate physical danger lessens, but a new tension appears between them. Huck tells James that James had been speaking in a way that did not sound like a slave. Alarmed, James quickly slips back into his expected dialect and questions Huck until Huck says James sounds normal again. Huck remains suspicious, and James realizes he must keep hiding not only his body but also his mind.
