On the porch, Bernice and Fatty argue bitterly about faith, money, and their long-standing family resentments. Bernice challenges Fatty’s bitterness and brings up Chona’s funeral; Fatty admits Chona was good but insists the Hill never truly had solidarity and that “them days” are gone.

Bernice then reveals new information about Dodo: Reverend Spriggs confessed that he repeatedly told a state employee about Dodo’s whereabouts, but the state employee—who mainly chauffeured officials—didn’t really want to catch Dodo. Each time the state came looking, the driver would visit Spriggs, Spriggs would warn Bernice, and Bernice would alert Chona so Dodo could be hidden; Bernice insists Doc Roberts later found Dodo by accident when Doc came alone.

Bernice asks Fatty a pointed question about old construction work with their father, Shad Davis. Fatty confirms there is a deep, capped well near Hayes and Franklin, close to the public fountain lot, and says he can locate it even though it may be hidden by grass and junk.

Before leaving, Bernice gives Fatty a large envelope. Hours later, away from customers, Fatty opens it and finds a Bible containing $500 and a note; a further $400 is taped to the second page. He tears the money off in excitement and rushes back inside, letting the rest of Bernice’s note fall away, later regretting his haste.
