After escaping onto the moving train, Rune and Gideon catch their breath in an empty car. As the train heads south at sunset, Rune reflects that leaving Gideon had been a mistake driven by fear of losing him. Remembering the future she once imagined, including three children, Rune realizes she does not want escape at any cost; she wants a life that includes Gideon, which means choosing to stay.

Gideon misunderstands her first mention of children and assumes Rune still intends to flee, so he begins planning how to help her change trains or find a safe harbor. Rune stops him and asks whether he still wants her to remain with him. She tells Gideon that she wants to be his wife and implies that marriage and a shared future are what would make her stay and fight. Gideon is shocked, then deeply moved, and says marrying Rune would be the honor of his life.

Because they are on a passenger train, Gideon leads Rune through several cars in search of a sleeper compartment.
