Seventy. Rune
Overview
Rune gives up her final escape the moment she sees Gideon about to be executed in the rail yard, returning to save him instead. As soldiers and hounds close in, Rune and Gideon flee together and board a moving train, narrowly escaping capture.
The chapter turns Rune's rescue into a defining moment of self-recognition: by choosing Gideon and risking everything, she reclaims the fearless identity she once embodied as the Crimson Moth. Their survival keeps their partnership alive and confirms that Rune can no longer separate escape from who she truly is.
Summary
As Rune's train pulls away, she looks out one last time and sees Gideon in the rail yard with a gun at his back. Realizing he is about to be killed, Rune forces her way off the departing train, jumps onto the platform, and runs back across the yard. She reaches him in time and finds the witch sent to kill him dead at her feet, but her relief quickly turns to anger because saving Gideon has cost Rune her last chance to escape.
Rune confronts Gideon, furious that he was there at all, and Gideon counters that he only came to make sure Rune got away safely. Their argument is cut short when barking and approaching soldiers reveal that more enemies are closing in on them. Gideon grabs the pistol Rune stole and pulls her deeper into the rail yard, but the open tracks offer little cover and nowhere obvious to hide.
While soldiers fire and hunting hounds gain on them, Rune notices another train entering the yard. Gideon heads straight for it, knowing it will slow as it passes through even if it will not stop. Rune understands that boarding the moving train is their only option, because staying behind means being caught by the soldiers and dogs.
Gideon times his leap perfectly and swings himself onto the second-to-last car. Rune falls behind and nearly misses her chance as the final car passes her, with bullets flying and dogs at her heels. In that desperate moment, Rune rediscovers the daring self she once was during her heists as the Crimson Moth and realizes she has been running not just from Cressida or the Blood Guard, but from her own deepest desires and identity.
Drawing on that recovered courage, Rune jumps for the last car and catches the railing just before the train pulls away. She hauls herself aboard despite the pain and the danger. Gideon emerges with the pistol and fires back at the pursuing soldiers until the train clears the rail yard, carrying both of them to temporary safety.
