Chapter 13

Overview

At the floor-four settlement, Carl and Donut finally get a breather and learn more about the dungeon’s systems as Mordecai helps them sort through achievements, patch notes, and rewards. Their loot shows that the game is beginning to tailor prizes to their growing fame: Donut gains a powerful tracking upgrade, Carl receives a major boxer upgrade with a humiliating drawback, and a rare casino chip points them toward the Desperado Club. The chapter also drops a quiet but important hint about Mordecai’s past with Odette, suggesting deeper history behind his guidance.

Summary

After reaching Mordecai’s chamber in the medium settlement, Carl immediately crashes into a chair from exhaustion while Mongo curls up by the fire. Mordecai teleports back from town, slightly drunk, and explains that because he is now their manager, his outside destination is tied to the last settlement Donut entered. As they talk, Mordecai explains how he bypasses his species’ alcohol problem with alchemy, describes his background as a mycologist, and casually mentions that Odette made him study the sixth floor when they reached it together, a detail Carl and Donut both notice but do not press.

Carl says he has many achievements, boxes, and twelve stat points to assign, but Mordecai tells him to wait on the stat points until after checking his new gear. Mordecai also tells them not to go to the Desperado Club that night because Carl needs sleep, and he mentions a missed announcement containing patch notes, including a broken Golem spell and a new collective sponsorship bidding system. Carl and Donut review several important achievements: both pass one quadrillion views and receive fan boxes that cannot be opened for thirty hours, Carl gets the mockery achievement for starting a boss fight without killing the boss, and both Carl and Donut receive the Johnny Quest and Hadji achievements, which upgrade their quest rewards and add occasional quest markers to their maps.

Donut opens her reward boxes first. Alongside miscellaneous cosmetic items, she receives 5,000 gold, a skill potion, and a pair of fleeting Fang Caps from her upgraded quest box. She drinks the skill potion immediately, raising Acute Ears to level three and greatly improving the tactical information on her minimap about nearby mobs. The Fang Caps boost bite damage and can inflict poison or paralysis, and Mordecai suggests they are better suited for Mongo than for Donut, so Donut decides Carl will put them on Mongo later.

Carl then opens his own rewards and finds more explosives, trap supplies, and hobgoblin detonator materials, reinforcing his sapper path. His Lucky Bastard box contains an extremely rare casino chip that amazes Mordecai, and his platinum quest box contains 5,000 gold plus a time-limited Scroll of Upgrade. Carl uses the scroll immediately, and it upgrades his Enchanted BigBoi Boxers into an even stronger item with major stat bonuses and the new Freeballing benefit, which doubles below-the-waist attack damage and training speed but permanently prevents him from wearing additional clothing over his crotch. Donut and Mordecai laugh at the cruel timing because Carl had just said he wanted pants.

Once the joking dies down, Mordecai explains that deeper-floor gear scales much harder and that the dungeon is already shaping Carl and Donut’s loot around their public brands, which means more upgrade scrolls are likely coming. He finally identifies Carl’s rare casino prize as a 100,000-gold comp chip that cannot be redeemed directly and must be gambled at special games inside the Desperado Club. With Carl exhausted and the club visit postponed until the next night, the chapter ends with the promise of sleep, shopping, and a new lesson in how the casino works.
