Chapter 27
Overview
Ana identifies the hidden suspect as Sunus Pyktis, a supposedly dead former Shroud officer whose access and knowledge fit the impossible crimes. When Ana shows Thelenai and Ghrelin the coded drawings recovered from the jungle transmutation device, their shock confirms Pyktis’s connection to the Shroud.
Pushed by Ana’s accusation that one of their own has become a prolific killer, Thelenai finally stops resisting. The chapter ends with Thelenai and Ghrelin ready to reveal the secret history behind the Shroud and the marrow, shifting the investigation from deduction to long-suppressed truth.
Summary
Thelenai and Ghrelin sit down with Ana and Din, both visibly shaken by what Ana has already uncovered. Thelenai tries to regain control by insisting that she has cooperated in good faith and demanding the name of the killer before Ghrelin is questioned further. Ana agrees, but says she must first explain how she reached her conclusion.
Ana reveals that Thelenai’s earlier list of officers with access to the robbed safe was incomplete because it included only living officers. After prompting Din to recall Thelenai’s exact wording, Ana explains that the permissions of dead officers apparently remain in the bank system. She searched those deceased names and found one man whose past role gave him the knowledge needed to orchestrate the crimes: Immunis Sunus Pyktis, a former officer transferred from Rathras to work on the Shroud before his reported accidental death. Ana states plainly that she believes Pyktis is still alive and is the chief perpetrator behind the murders and deceptions.
Ghrelin reacts with astonishment rather than denial, which confirms to Ana that Pyktis is known to them. Ghrelin says that "knowing" anyone connected to the Shroud is complicated, and Din notices Ghrelin’s fingers unconsciously tapping as they had before when the Shroud was discussed. When Thelenai resists and says Ana’s theory is only a possibility, Ana changes tactics and asks whether the Shroud uses codes, especially visual ones.
Ana then produces Din’s copied drawings from the leather sheet found beside the machine that transformed smugglers in the jungle. The effect is immediate: Thelenai visibly flinches, Ghrelin rises in shock, and both react as though the symbols unmistakably point to Pyktis. Their response shows Ana that the coded markings are deeply tied to the Shroud and that the jungle device was likely meant as a message for them.
Using that reaction, Ana forcefully corners Thelenai. Ana accuses her of withholding the truth, argues that someone from her own institution has escaped into the jungle and become a mass murderer, and says she cannot understand his larger plan until they speak honestly. Faced with Ana’s anger and the evidence before her, Thelenai finally breaks. When Ana asks whether the case is really about the marrow, Thelenai admits that it is, and she and Ghrelin agree to begin telling the full story.
