Chapter 13
Overview
The investigators finally inspect the altered Apoth box and learn it belongs to Immunis Rava Ghrelin, a medikker overseeing a secret shipment of experimental respiratory-disease treatments. When the safe is opened, its contents have been replaced with a preserved severed head carrying a hostile note, transforming the bank breach from a clever theft into a deliberate threat. Ghrelin’s terror and despair imply that the stolen materials are extremely significant, while Malo is forced to treat the discovery as both a criminal clue and a potential biohazard.
Summary
After the remaining vault boxes are checked, Tufwa confirms that only Immunis Rava Ghrelin’s Apoth safe shows a changed weight. The wardens bring Ghrelin in, and Dinios Kol questions him before opening the box. Ghrelin says he works in the Medikker Fermentation Division, developing new medical alterations and grafts, and he grows visibly strained as soon as Kol mentions that his box was the one tampered with.
Because Ghrelin reacts as if he already fears bad news, Kol presses him about the contents. Ghrelin admits the box held papers and reagents that were supposed to be collected by a messenger and sent into the inner rings. He describes the materials as an experimental healing graft formula still under development, one intended to fight deadly respiratory diseases, and his anxious tapping and evasiveness make clear that the shipment is sensitive and important.
In the vault, Ghrelin unlocks the safe with his handprint, but before Kol can control the inspection, Ghrelin opens it himself. He immediately recoils in horror and screams. Inside, instead of the papers and reagents, the investigators find a preserved severed human head with its eyes removed.
The head also contains a message tucked between its lips: “For those who sip from the marrow / Te siz imperiya.” The grotesque substitution shows that the tampering was not just theft but an intentional act of menace or warning. Recognizing that an organic object in the vault could carry disease, Tira Malo orders the bank cleared so the wardens can begin contamination procedures and identify the head.
Ghrelin does not focus on the corpse or the note for long. He panics over the disappearance of his materials, then breaks down completely, shoving away a Treasury officer who tries to comfort him and crying that no one understands what has been done to him. His collapse suggests the missing shipment matters far beyond ordinary bank contents and deepens the mystery around the bank breach.
