Chapter 12
Overview
At the bank, Dinios Kol watches an audit of the Iyalet vault reveal that one safe's weight no longer matches its records. The altered box belongs to the Apoths, not the Treasury, and it appears to have been opened without force despite stricter, individualized security. This discovery suggests the impostor may have had access to multiple kinds of privileged warding, making the breach broader and more dangerous than anyone feared.
Summary
Dinios Kol goes to the Treasury bank and finds it in chaos, with business halted and crowds demanding access to their money. After forcing his way past shaken guards, Dinios Kol enters the Iyalet vault, where Treasury official Kardas, Signum Tufwa, and Tira Malo are overseeing an emergency audit of recently opened vault boxes.
Tufwa explains that they are checking boxes opened in the week before the tenth of Hajnal by comparing their current weights to the recorded weights from their last access. For a long stretch, every box appears normal, which makes Dinios Kol briefly wonder whether Ana's theory about the impostor entering the vault was wrong.
The inspection changes when Tufwa weighs one box and discovers it is four stone heavier than it should be. Kardas identifies the box as belonging not to the Treasury but to the Apoth Iyalet. Tufwa says the box was last opened on the second of Hajnal for a deposit by an Apoth immunis named Rava Ghrelin, but he does not know what was stored inside because the contents are confidential.
Malo then explains why this discovery is even more alarming than the Treasury breach. Apoth boxes require individual biological samples and should be harder to open than Treasury boxes, yet this box shows no sign of damage or forced entry. That leads Kardas and Dinios Kol to conclude that the impostor may have possessed whatever privileges were needed to open both Treasury and Apoth locks, greatly expanding the scale of the threat. Dinios Kol orders Malo's wardens to bring in Rava Ghrelin for questioning and tells Tufwa to continue checking the other safes for additional tampering.
