Chapter 19

Overview

Perihelion’s bluff forces the colonists into talks, giving SecUnit 03 a way into the installation and revealing that the captive SecUnit is being held near the contagion source eight levels below the plaza. At the same time, Murderbot 1.0 uncovers the true origin and transmission path of the alien contamination, learns that infected humans spread it through implants and feed interfaces, and accidentally infects itself by scanning targetContact.

To stop the threat, Murderbot 1.0 and Murderbot 2.0 destroy targetControlSystem at the cost of Central and 2.0 itself. SecUnit 03 then rescues the damaged, infected Murderbot 1.0 from targetContact, turning the chapter into both a major revelation about the enemy and a successful retrieval.

Summary

SecUnit 03 lands with Arada near the Pre-CR installation while Perihelion jams scans and comms. On the surface dock terrace, Thiago, Overse, and Iris meet five Adamantine colonists after Perihelion forces negotiations by threatening the colony’s terraforming engine and demonstrating that threat with pathfinder explosions. While the humans stall for information, SecUnit 03 sends stealth drones into the complex and learns that armed colonists are hidden near the eastern entrances.

Deep underground, Murderbot 1.0 studies the fused Pre-CR system and works out what happened: an alien remnant contaminated a human, reached the old central system, and created targetControlSystem as a hybrid malware-like intelligence. Murderbot 1.0 and Murderbot 2.0 conclude that targetControlSystem spread through human feed interfaces and implants, and that ART was likely infected through the augmented humans Ras and Eletra rather than directly through ship systems. This realization reframes the whole crisis by showing that infected humans are the real transmission path.

Murderbot 1.0 then discovers that the apparently dead human body linked to the system is still active as targetContact. When Murderbot 1.0 scans the room and the body, it accidentally infects itself with anomalous code. With help from Murderbot 2.0 and after bargaining with the damaged Central system for permissions, Murderbot 1.0 initiates a purge; targetControlSystem counterattacks through the connection, but Murderbot 2.0 acts like killware, pulls the infection back into Central’s partition, and tells Murderbot 1.0 to shut the system down. Murderbot 1.0 obeys, sacrificing both Central and Murderbot 2.0, then smashes the hardware to destroy targetControlSystem physically.

Back on the surface, the negotiation shifts when the humans expose evidence of the colonists’ hidden implants. The accusation fractures the colonists’ united front, and one of them reveals that the captive SecUnit is being held eight levels below the plaza, near the contagion source. Perihelion orders the humans to withdraw, launches more pathfinders as a distraction, and gives SecUnit 03 permission to proceed with the retrieval.

After destroying the system, Murderbot 1.0 is attacked by the moving targetContact and flees up a gravity tube, badly damaged and close to shutdown. On an upper level, SecUnit 03 finds Murderbot 1.0 by drone ping, avoids scanning it, and holds off targetContact long enough to carry Murderbot 1.0 up the stairs and out to ART’s shuttle. Once aboard, Murderbot 1.0 warns that it is infected and tells ART not to scan it; as the shuttle escapes, a pathfinder explosion leaves targetContact offline, and Murderbot 1.0 finally loses consciousness.

Who Appears

  • Murderbot 1.0
discovers the contamination’s origin, gets infected, destroys targetControlSystem, and is rescued while near shutdown
  • SecUnit 03
leads the retrieval infiltration, scouts the complex, and physically extracts Murderbot 1.0
  • Perihelion
orchestrates the bluff, controls drones and pathfinders, and coordinates the rescue operation
  • Murderbot 2.0
analyzes the infection with Murderbot 1.0 and sacrifices itself to trap targetControlSystem
  • Arada
flies the shuttle, supports SecUnit 03’s insertion, and helps receive the rescue
  • Thiago
questions the colonists during the staged negotiation and helps obtain the captive’s location
  • Overse
plays the hardline negotiator to pressure the colonists into revealing information
  • Iris
identifies the colonists’ language and presses them about the contamination and implants
  • targetControlSystem
alien hybrid malware that infected the colony and is finally purged and destroyed
  • TargetContact
the still-active infected human host body that attacks Murderbot and is later knocked offline
  • Central
damaged Pre-CR central system that grants purge permissions and dies in the shutdown
  • Adamantine colonists
divided Targets pressured into admitting implants and revealing where the captive SecUnit is held
