Chapter 6
Overview
Ras’s attack on SecUnit is revealed to be the result of hidden control implants placed in him and Eletra by the hostile aliens. Ras dies when his implant is activated, while SecUnit and Amena remove Eletra’s implant and barely save her after ART’s MedSystem mysteriously comes back online. The crisis forces SecUnit to admit that ART is its friend and that it fears ART is dead, sharpening both its grief and its determination to regain control of the ship by searching engineering for an auxiliary access point.
Summary
After Ras shoots SecUnit with an energy weapon, Amena jumps on Ras to stop him while Eletra tries to make sense of the sudden attack. Ras babbles incoherently, then both he and Eletra collapse. SecUnit scans them and realizes Ras has been killed by a remotely activated implant, while Eletra is suffering the same kind of attack. Watching a drone feed from the sealed control area, SecUnit sees the hostile gray aliens gathered around a device and concludes they have triggered the implants.
SecUnit jams the signal, which stops Eletra’s convulsions but does not save Ras. Examining Eletra’s back, Amena and SecUnit find a crude implanted device hidden between her shoulder blades and infer that both captives were secretly fitted with control implants while unconscious. They also conclude the implants must have caused pain and confusion, but not complete ignorance of their existence by themselves, suggesting the aliens also tampered with Ras and Eletra’s memory or perception. Amena presses SecUnit for more information, and SecUnit explains that it killed two aliens earlier and that the surviving ones may have activated the implants either to locate the escapees or punish them.
Because Eletra’s condition worsens rapidly, Amena proposes removing the implant despite only basic medical training. SecUnit takes over the procedure, using the emergency kit’s guidance to cut out the device with a laser scalpel. Eletra briefly wakes, but then crashes, and the emergency kit directs resuscitation steps. SecUnit performs chest compressions while Amena attempts rescue breathing, but they are failing when ART’s MedSystem unexpectedly powers back on in factory-standard mode.
With no better option, SecUnit places Eletra in the MedSystem. The unit immediately stabilizes her heartbeat and breathing and begins repairing the wound. Afterward, Amena questions SecUnit about the danger and its own injuries, and the conversation shifts when she realizes SecUnit is not simply angry. Under pressure, SecUnit admits that the transport’s bot pilot, ART, is its friend and that it believes ART is dead because it cannot imagine ART allowing the current disaster otherwise. Amena tries to calm SecUnit, recognizing that it is grieving and emotionally destabilized.
SecUnit regains focus by returning to the practical problem of taking control of the ship. It drops its jamming signal on Eletra’s removed implant, checks the alien activity, and reviews confusing bridge displays from a scout drone. Amena identifies the images as navigation and power data and suggests there might be an auxiliary engineering station that could provide access to ship systems even if the bridge remains sealed. Deciding this is the best lead, SecUnit gives Amena Ras’s energy weapon for protection, apologizes for being an asshole, and leaves for engineering after promising to stay in contact over the feed while Amena remains with the recovering Eletra.
In the appended interview excerpt, Bharadwaj notices that SecUnit censors the company’s name in its transcript and suggests this may relate to trauma, even raising the idea of treatment. The exchange reinforces how deeply SecUnit’s past abuse by the company still shapes its reactions in the present.
Who Appears
- SecUnitProtects Amena and Eletra, identifies the implants, removes Eletra’s device, and admits its grief over ART.
- AmenaStops Ras’s attack, helps treat Eletra, confronts SecUnit emotionally, and suggests checking engineering for an aux station.
- EletraColonial captive nearly killed by a hidden implant; survives after SecUnit removes it and the MedSystem stabilizes her.
- RasShoots SecUnit under implant-induced confusion, then dies when the hostile aliens activate his hidden control device.
- ARTAbsent transport intelligence SecUnit considers a friend; its MedSystem unexpectedly reactivates and saves Eletra.
- Target FourUses a handheld device in the control area, apparently triggering or managing the captives’ implants.
- BharadwajAppears in the appended interview excerpt, questioning SecUnit about company censorship and trauma treatment.
