Chapter 20
Overview
Back aboard ART, Murderbot survives emergency repairs, has the alien code removed, and is forced to confront how far ART and both human crews went to save it. ART then asks Murderbot to join an upcoming mission, turning a rescue into a possible new phase in their relationship.
As reinforcements are summoned and the legal fight over the contaminated colony shifts, Murderbot also helps SecUnit 3 face life as a rogue construct. The arrival of Mensah and Pin-Lee reconnects Murderbot to Preservation and gives it permission to consider wanting both ART and a continuing place with its old people.
Summary
Murderbot restarts during the return to ART, collapses repeatedly, and is treated in the shuttle bay because the contaminated code in its system makes the main medical platform unsafe to use. ART’s rescued crew, Preservation’s survey team, and SecUnit 3 are all aboard, and the immediate crisis has eased: everyone has returned to the ship, and the remaining Barish-Estranza personnel are being screened for contamination. During the recovery, ART’s humans learn that Murderbot is the rogue SecUnit from the GrayCris and TranRollinHyfa incidents, but both groups agree to keep each other’s secrets.
While Murderbot is being manually repaired, it learns that ART had been willing to bomb the colony to force its release before accepting a less violent plan. Ratthi pushes ART to show Murderbot the security archive, and Murderbot watches ART, its humans, Preservation’s people, and SecUnit 3 cooperate to rescue it. The realization that so many people acted together for its sake overwhelms Murderbot. Once its body is stable, Murderbot’s consciousness is moved into an isolation box so ART can remove the contaminated code, and ART stays with it, watches media, and then proposes that Murderbot join ART’s crew for an upcoming mission.
Back in Medical, Murderbot discusses ART’s offer with Amena, who suspects this is a trial step toward a deeper connection and says ART cares about Murderbot. The broader situation remains uncertain: ART cannot safely use wormhole travel until university decontamination specialists arrive, the legal case against Barish-Estranza has been complicated by the alien remnant, and both sides send message buoys for reinforcements. Meanwhile, ART has disarmed SecUnit 3 and kept it aboard under watch.
Later, SecUnit 3 quietly approaches Murderbot and reveals that it has seen Murderbot’s files. Unlike 2.0, SecUnit 3 is not trying to return to corporate control, but it does not know how to live with freedom or make decisions. Murderbot tells SecUnit 3 that fear of change is still better than living with a governor module that can kill it, assures it that Preservation’s people can be trusted, and agrees to send excerpts from its files to help SecUnit 3 decide what to do next.
Twenty cycles after arriving in the system, a Preservation armed responder comes through the wormhole. ART reveals it secretly launched a hidden message buoy before targetControlSystem deleted it, which is why Preservation arrived so quickly. Mensah and Pin-Lee come aboard, the misunderstandings with ART’s crew are resolved, and Preservation begins helping challenge Barish-Estranza’s claim. In a semi-private talk, Murderbot asks Mensah about her trauma treatment, admits it hid ART from her, and confesses it may want to spend time with ART without losing its place with Preservation; Mensah reassures Murderbot that a temporary mission could let it learn what it wants.
After the crews settle into an uneasy waiting period, Murderbot visits ART on the control deck. They talk about media, about sharing entertainment and context with SecUnit 3, and about how 2.0’s choice to share Murderbot’s files helped save them all. The chapter ends with Murderbot more open than before to ART’s offer and to the possibility of a future that includes both ART and Preservation.
