Chapter Eleven
Contains spoilersOverview
Adam overhears Olive’s confession and she lies that her feelings are for someone else, preserving their arrangement but intensifying her turmoil. Holden, Adam’s closest friend, arrives and reveals their deep history and friction with Tom. Olive recognizes how much Adam risks, confirms they are friends, and leaves after he urges her to tell “Jeremy.”
Summary
At Starbucks, Adam calmly confirms he heard Olive’s earlier confession. Panicked, Olive lies that it “wasn’t about” Adam and claims she likes another man. Adam, gentle but pragmatic, notes their arrangement should end if it stops helping; Olive insists it’s complicated and that she can’t confess to the other guy.
Holden Rodrigues, Adam’s longtime friend, interrupts and sits with them. Through teasing banter, he reveals their shared past—growing up around diplomats, getting suspended together, and Adam attending prom as Holden’s date—while also griping about driving Tom to the airport for the Boston trip. Holden’s disdain for Tom is clear, though the cause is vague.
After Holden steps away, Olive learns Adam never told Holden the relationship is fake. Adam doesn’t explain why, and adds that Holden respects Olive’s work. The realization hits Olive that Adam is lying to colleagues and friends for her, risking his reputation, while she benefits more. Overwhelmed, she declines coffee and prepares to leave for the lab.
Before she goes, Olive asks if they are friends; Adam says yes. Then, believing her feelings are for Jeremy, he calls Olive extraordinary and encourages her to tell him. On the verge of tears, Olive exits and heads back to campus, rattled by the lie and the growing weight of their arrangement.
