Chapter Twenty-Two
Contains spoilersOverview
After a lighthearted dinner with Holden and Malcolm, Olive and Adam walk home and confront the fallout from Tom’s exposure. Adam shares that Harvard will fire Tom and that his grant is uncertain, while Olive has found a nearby lab. They openly acknowledge their long-standing awareness of each other, and Olive confesses she lied about liking someone else—then tells Adam she loves him.
Summary
Holden entertains Olive, Adam, and Malcolm with embarrassing childhood stories about Adam during dinner. Outside, fortune cookies prompt reflection: Adam pockets a slip that reads, “You can fall in love: someone will catch you.” Olive asks Adam to walk her home, setting the stage for a candid conversation.
On the way, Olive asks about Tom. Adam says Harvard plans to fire Tom and that Title IX will contact Olive; his own grant status is uncertain, which he currently doesn’t care about. He apologizes for having trusted Tom with Olive. Olive shares she’s likely found a closer lab, meaning she won’t need to move.
The talk shifts to their history. Olive says she remembered their first bathroom encounter; Adam admits he recognized her then and had thought about her for years, recalling her early talks and moments at department events. When Olive asks if knowing her influenced his agreement to fake-date, Adam says he wanted to help—and that it wasn’t the only reason.
At Olive’s building, she decides to be fully honest. Using Type I and II error as a metaphor for fear of misreading versus missing the truth, she admits she lied by making Adam think she had feelings for someone else. Centering what matters, she then tells him, “Ik hou van jou, Adam.”
