Overview

Talia Kemper meets prison chaplain Father Richard Decker and recognizes him as her supposedly dead husband, Noel. She pleads with him to reveal the truth to stop her imminent execution, but he performs last rites and initially denies knowing her. Just before the visit ends, he slips into Noel’s true voice and tells Talia he loves her, then leaves without helping. Rhea ends the visit, and Talia realizes no one believes her.

Summary

In the present, Talia Kemper sits across a glass divider from prison chaplain Father Richard Decker. She studies his face, the bump on his nose, and his eyes, and becomes certain he is her husband Noel, long presumed dead. Although his deeper voice initially throws her, she recalls Noel’s history of pretending and insists on his identity.

Talia addresses him as Noel and urgently explains that she is scheduled to die by lethal injection the next day for his murder. Father Decker corrects her, keeps calling her by her last name, and begins administering last rites, placing his hands on the glass and reciting prayers for her soul. Talia begs him to stop and tell the truth that he is alive, but he continues the ritual.

As Talia becomes increasingly desperate, crying and pleading that only he can stop the execution, Father Decker completes the prayers, asking for God to welcome her to paradise. She rejects the prayer, saying she wants to go home with him, drawing a low warning from Officer Rhea for crossing a line.

When the prayers end, Talia fears he will leave. She makes a final plea, saying she loves him. For a brief moment, Father Decker’s demeanor changes; he leans close, locks eyes with her, and, in Noel’s true voice, says he loves her too before he can say more.

Rhea ends the visit, announcing time is over. The light fades from Father Decker’s eyes, and he walks away without another look, leaving Talia devastated. As Rhea helps her up, Talia insists he is Noel and that he admitted it, but Rhea dismisses her claims. Talia realizes Noel has fooled everyone, and unless something changes within twenty-four hours, she will be executed.
