Overview

Talia Kemper meets her attorney, Clarence Bowman, to hear the outcome of her appeal and learns it has been denied, leaving her less than two weeks from execution. Numb and defeated, she instructs Bowman to stop further appeals. As she is escorted out, Talia sees a man who looks exactly like her deceased husband, Noel, and he makes eye contact with her.

Summary

Talia is escorted from her solitary cell for a scheduled visit with her lawyer, Clarence Bowman. She undergoes the standard shackling and a quick pat-down by the guard Rhea, reflecting bitterly on her scant visitors and the deaths of her parents, and fearing the news Bowman might bring.

Rhea leads Talia to the glass-partitioned visiting booths. From Rhea’s description, Bowman appears as usual—well dressed and not smiling—foreshadowing bad news. Talia and Bowman pick up their red phones, and he tells her the appeal has been denied. The decision hits Talia hard; with under two weeks until her execution, her last hope has failed.

Talia protests her innocence and reminds Bowman of her alibi with Kinsey, but Bowman explains the prosecutor persuaded the jury—and the appeals judge—that Talia prearranged the explosion. When Talia asks about more appeals, Bowman says they can try but sees no hope, advising her to let go.

Overwhelmed and depleted—emotionally and financially—Talia tells Bowman to stop filing further appeals. Bowman gently affirms her decision and begins discussing legal details, which Talia tunes out, absorbed by the reality that she will be executed soon.

After they hang up, Rhea comes to escort Talia back. As Talia rises, she notices a man in a dark suit speaking with a redheaded inmate. He has neatly combed dark hair, a clean-shaven face, and a distinct bump on the bridge of his nose, features that resemble Noel.

Talia urgently asks Rhea who the man is, but Rhea dismisses her questions and moves her along. Just before Talia is pulled from the room, the man looks up and meets her eyes. Talia recognizes him—she believes the man is Noel.
