20. Three Body: Expedition
Overview
Wang Miao witnesses a decisive moment in the Three Body world: Trisolaris has built an interstellar fleet and launched it toward a nearby star system as a bid for civilizational survival. The chapter reveals that the Trisolarans’ answer to their unstable world is not prediction but migration, greatly raising the scale of their ambitions. When the game ends with an invitation to the Earth-Trisolaris Organization, Wang learns that his progress in the game has led directly to real-world recruitment.
Summary
At a cold dawn in the Three Body world, Wang Miao finds that the familiar structures from earlier game eras have vanished. Instead of monuments or buildings, he sees an immense silent crowd stretching across the desert, with countless Trisolarans all staring at the sky. The scale of the gathering tells Wang that this is a planetary event involving nearly the entire civilization.
When Wang Miao looks up, he sees a huge square formation of moving lights suspended above the planet. A man beside Wang addresses him as "Great Copernicus" and explains that Wang has arrived late, after three more cycles of civilization. The man identifies the lights as the Trisolaran interstellar fleet and tells Wang that Trisolaran civilization has already developed spaceflight capable of reaching one-tenth the speed of light.
Wang Miao questions the man about the fleet’s purpose and learns that the ships are heading toward a star system with planets about four light-years away, the nearest suitable target. The explanation makes clear that the Trisolarans are no longer trying to solve the instability of their own world; instead, they are pursuing survival through emigration. This reveals a major shift in Trisolaran strategy, from enduring chaotic eras to seeking a permanent new home beyond their system.
The crowd erupts in joy as the ships brighten and begin accelerating, turning the dawn into brilliant daylight. Then the cheering fades, and the Trisolarans watch in silence as their hope recedes into the sky, knowing that only descendants centuries later may hear of the expedition’s success. After the fleet disappears, text announces that the Trisolaran expedition has begun and that Three Body is over; when Wang Miao returns to reality, he is instructed to attend an Earth-Trisolaris Organization meeting, confirming that the game has been a recruitment path into the real-world movement.
