Chapter 14: Rosabelle
Contains spoilersOverview
James crashes a damaged mini chopper into the soldiers attempting to seize Rosabelle, then uses the chaos to extract her. Under heavy fire, he improvises to keep the vehicle moving and demands a route to Clara, revealing a plan to help. Rosabelle, bound to a covert multi-phase mission to escape Ark Island with James, weighs the risks to Clara and urges an ocean escape by driving off the cliff.
Summary
As James Kent barrels a broken mini chopper toward the soldiers surrounding Rosabelle and Clara’s arrest scene, Lieutenant Sebastian Rivers orders him to stand down and coordinates return fire. James reveals an automatic rifle and opens fire, while soldiers shoot the vehicle, clearly aiming to contain rather than kill him. Sebastian shouts that there are fifteen minutes left in “the script,” indicating a time-limited constraint on James’s behavior.
James drives directly into the fray, sometimes running alongside the slowing trike to push it. He is shot multiple times but keeps advancing, suggesting the shooters are avoiding fatal shots. Suddenly, James kills the two soldiers restraining Rosabelle and orders her to get in, revealing he came with a plan to extract her. They lurch away under gunfire as James, filthy and bloodied, pilots the damaged vehicle.
Rosabelle, shocked that the man she slit open is asking after her welfare, notes hidden foot pedals in the trike’s floor. James exposes and uses them, dramatically improving speed. He asks where Clara has been taken and how to reach the asylum, insisting on helping to save Clara. Rosabelle, overwhelmed by the island’s surveillance and consequences, argues that a rescue would get her executed and thus doom Clara, who is being kept alive to control Rosabelle.
While aircraft gather overhead and soldiers close in, James runs out of ammunition and searches the glove box in vain. Rosabelle internally reviews her orders: she must stay close to James and get both of them off Ark Island as phase one of a six-phase operation to infiltrate enemy territory; failure at any phase means her execution. She notes she has not been ordered to kill anyone and expects further instructions only after reaching The New Republic.
James abruptly tells Rosabelle to get out, denying any intent to save the person who killed him and insisting he only meant to save Clara. Rosabelle, oddly heartened, confirms he does not care about her, only Clara. With helicopters converging, she pivots to strategy and asks if he can swim. When he suggests jumping off the cliff, she corrects him: they should drive off the cliff together, into the sea, as the only viable way off the island.
