Chapter 38: James
Contains spoilersOverview
James escorts a restrained, lab-coat-clad and barefoot Rosabelle through underground tunnels toward a supermax cell, battling rage, desire, and betrayal. He briefly returns to secure shoes for her, then confronts her about her identity and motives; Rosabelle reveals her full name, confirms she has a younger sister, and shares painful history, while refusing to renounce potential use of the seized vial.
Summary
James narrates the aftermath of Rosabelle’s capture as he leads her through the tunnels with a gun to her. Realizing she is barefoot, he humiliatingly backtracks through medical areas to find her shoes, even as he despises his own lingering feelings and the absurdity of showing her care.
Kenji briefly confronts James about lingering in the medical ward, mocking James’s concern. James returns to the tunnels, struggling with intense attraction and anger as he holds Rosabelle close, acutely aware she is naked under a lab coat and restrained with zip ties.
James berates Rosabelle for deception and demands the truth about her identity, accusing her of fabricating a sister. He pins her to the wall with the gun at her throat, then is shaken when she meets his gaze with raw emotion, which reignites his conflicted desire and disrupts his resolve.
They continue walking in silence until Rosabelle volunteers information: her real name is Rosabelle Wolff, her family calls her Rosa, and she does have a younger sister named Clara. James stops as Rosabelle explains that their mother died by suicide when Rosabelle was ten and Clara was three, and that Rosabelle raised Clara in poverty.
Rosabelle describes Clara’s chronic illness and the regime’s coercion: rations and occasional medicine were withheld or diminished to control Rosabelle’s compliance, even as Clara deteriorated, at times chewing the skin off her hands from hunger. Rosabelle frames her actions as driven by Clara’s survival, while acknowledging it offers no moral defense.
When James demands clarity on her intentions—especially regarding the vial and any escape—Rosabelle admits she has not decided what she will do next. James, enraged by her ambiguity and his own weakness, refuses her request to face him, fearing he will act impulsively if he looks at her, and ends the scene hating both the situation and his conflicted feelings.
