Chapter 15: Rosabelle
Contains spoilersOverview
Inside the damaged mini chopper under heavy fire, Rosabelle pushes James Kent to take her with him to The New Republic in exchange for getting the aircraft working. After trading accusations about each other’s killings and motives, they agree to a conditional truce with strict terms set by James. Rosabelle overrides multiple safety warnings to launch a desperate escape as Sebastian Rivers closes in and helicopters attack, culminating in the trike going off a cliff and free-falling toward the sea.
Summary
As the chopper is trapped in a ring of explosions, Rosabelle tells James Kent he must take her with him to The New Republic. James refuses and calls Rosabelle a serial killer aligned with fascists, while Rosabelle argues that his own covert operation has killed many and that her motives are also worthy. When James mentions her impending wedding, Rosabelle denies it will happen.
Amid helicopter missile fire that forms a triangulated inferno, Rosabelle explains James is more valuable alive than dead. James jokes about being told this by beautiful women, which unsettles Rosabelle. He then agrees to leave but declares that once on his soil she will be turned in, and warns he will kill her if she runs, tries to kill him again, or threatens his family.
They seal a tense truce with a handshake that triggers an unexpected physical reaction in Rosabelle. Rosabelle then uses the chopper’s interface, which recognizes her newly granted small-aircraft authorization, and attempts to set a destination. She overrides the system’s refusal of a non-listed destination and a cascade of warnings about low battery, underinflated tire, nonfunctional safety belts and airbags, and broken camera sensors.
Another explosion strikes, and Rosabelle spots Sebastian Rivers approaching through the shattered windshield, spurring panic. Despite James’s protests and the vehicle’s warnings, Rosabelle switches to manual, climbs over James to seize the controls, and slams the accelerator.
The chopper-trike barrels through ten-foot flames while the low-battery alarm blares, racing toward the cliff as helicopters strafe them with gunfire, destroying the remaining wheels. The vehicle spins out, clips vegetation, and skids backward off the cliff.
With James shouting, the aircraft leaves solid ground and they free-fall, spiraling toward the sea.
