Katie heads to SWET helicopter-ditch training terrified of drowning but determined to pass so she can fly for her Coast Guard video. A wardrobe crisis erupts when her black one-piece rips during the first inversion, exposing her, but Hutch improvises a fix with his rash guard so she can continue. The incident heightens their charged rapport as Hutch both scolds and protects her. Katie resolves to ask Hutch that night to approve the mini-doc and reveal her job is at stake—if she survives training.
Summary
On the morning of SWET training, Katie is so anxious about simulated helicopter-crash survival that her usual swimsuit insecurity fades. During a FaceTime with her friend Beanie, Katie proudly cites her sectoral heterochromia as her beauty-list item, crediting Hutch for noticing and identifying it. Beanie insists Hutch likes her, but Katie deflects and rushes off to training, promising herself she will ask Hutch again that night to do the "Day in the Life" mini-doc and finally tell him why she needs it.
Katie recalls Rue’s steady support and colorful swimsuit gifts, along with Rue’s counsel that bravery grows with practice. Despite preferring to wear jeans, Hutch insists Katie bring a plain suit and forbids the floral ones. She settles on a black one-piece Rue had special-ordered—flattering but inadvertently provocative—and heads to the pool with Hutch.
At the pool, when Katie removes her cover-up, Hutch is alarmed by how revealing the suit looks and tries to shield her, calling it “too sexy.” With time short, he abruptly tosses her into the water to start training. Hutch and Carlos lower the inversion frame and coach Katie through the five-point harness and the upside-down escape steps, emphasizing disorientation control and methodical release.
On her first inversion, Katie calms herself by following Hutch’s advice to think, “I’ve been upside down before,” releases the harness smoothly, and pushes along the frame to exit. As she slips past, a bolt snags and tears the backside of her suit. She surfaces proud but soon discovers most of the back is ripped, exposing her.
Hutch proposes aborting, but Katie panics that quitting now would doom her ability to finish the video, fly in the helicopter, and keep her career. Seeing her determination, Hutch improvises a solution: he removes his rash guard and fashions it into a makeshift “diaper,” threading Katie’s legs through the sleeves and knotting the hem at her waist so she can remain covered.
With the emergency fix in place and onlookers waiting, Hutch declares the setup will hold, and they resume SWET. Katie, buoyed by Hutch’s protectiveness and her own urgency, continues the training, committed to passing and to confronting Hutch that evening about the mini-doc and the truth about her job.
