After a warm, story-filled anniversary dinner, simmering tension between Hutch and Cole explodes into a public fight back at the Starlite. Summary
Katie joins Rue, Hutch, and Cole for an Italian anniversary dinner where the family shares memories about their parents and childhood, creating a sense of connection and healing. The evening feels successful, capped by a generous tip to the waiter. On the walk back, however, Cole starts provoking Hutch with petty comparisons—money, job, height, even nicknames—escalating simmering rivalry into open conflict.
Back at the Starlite pool area, with The Gals and Sullivan nearby, the brothers snipe about the “Day in the Life” shoot. Hutch accuses Cole of sending a subordinate and manipulating him; Cole calls Katie a colleague, while Hutch insists Katie was anything but a neutral coworker. Cole then blurts that Hutch fell for Katie. When Hutch does not deny it, Cole abruptly reveals the truth: Katie is not his girlfriend and never was. Hutch, feeling deceived, attacks Cole and the brothers brawl while Rue restrains Katie from intervening, saying they need to work it out.
After they exhaust themselves, Hutch confronts Cole about the lie. Cole admits he manipulated Hutch to secure the mini-doc and suggests revenge played a part because he believed Hutch “gets everything.” Pressed, Cole confesses a deeper grievance: he has spent years feeling overshadowed by Hutch, resenting that Hutch “saved” him in the fatal crash and believing Hutch should have saved their mother instead.
Hutch is stunned by the revelation and asks if Cole has been driven by that belief all along. He then shares the critical truth: during the accident, their mother commanded Hutch to get Cole first, telling him to take Cole to safety and then come back. Hutch explains there was never time to return, and that he acted on their mother’s urgent instructions. He tells Cole, “I didn’t save you. Mom did,” and reframes Cole’s guilt by saying Cole was their mother’s last wish.
The conversation leaves both brothers in tears, with Hutch explicitly relieving Cole of the blame he has carried. Katie, Rue, The Gals, and Sullivan quietly witness the breakthrough, which shifts the family’s long-standing dynamic from avoidance to painful honesty.
