Demon tries to leverage Dori’s pregnancy to get clean, but June’s lead on Emmy triggers a rescue run to Atlanta with June and Everett. In a newly built stash house they find two small children and Emmy, whom Demon carries out. On the return, June reveals his parents’ history and a coming treatment option, yet Demon, deep in withdrawal, uses again.
Summary
Demon, hoping Dori’s pregnancy will motivate sobriety, imagines a simple path to getting clean. In reality, both he and Dori keep using, stealthily or openly. He goes to June for prenatal care and help, but June is consumed by new information: Martha has an address for Emmy in Atlanta. Despite Demon’s reservations, June plans a Sunday retrieval with her brother Everett and a lawfully carried sidearm.
They drive south before dawn. Demon times his day around looming withdrawal, while June and Everett bicker through the long trip. In Atlanta’s center they pause for coffee, then head to a blighted neighborhood. At the grim address, a neighbor says a shooting drove the occupants out; the group likely moved to a brand‑new, technically vacant house nearby.
They spot the new build and enter using a key left in a lockbox. Inside are drug paraphernalia, a dipped‑out man, and, in a bedroom, two small children on cardboard. In another room, they find Emmy and a second girl passed out, half dressed. The smell and bruising make the situation clear. Demon lifts Emmy and carries her to the car; Everett speeds off while June navigates them back toward the interstate.
On the shoulder of a freeway, June examines Emmy, who rouses but barely speaks. They wrap her in blankets and continue home. Demon crashes into withdrawal; June settles his stomach but cannot treat the dope sickness. Wedged with Emmy in the back, he listens as June talks about his parents, revealing she once housed his mother and knew his father, who died diving at Devil’s Bathtub. She urges Demon to think of the baby and mentions a forthcoming clinic option: Suboxone.
They reach home after dark. Emmy sips a soda, subdued but present. June secures promises from Demon, but he is desperate; he uses a pill stashed in his car in her driveway before heading back to Dori.
