Demon clings to the idea that Dori’s pregnancy will be the reason they finally get clean, but addiction keeps overruling intention. Dori starts hiding her shots to seem “good,” while Demon recognizes how the drug’s pull keeps knocking him down no matter what he believes.

Trying to do something responsible for Dori, Demon goes to June for prenatal help, but June is consumed with a new lead on Emmy in Atlanta. June has a specific address and plans to go with her armed brother Everett; she insists Demon come too because Emmy trusts him and will be ashamed to face family.

On Sunday they drive to Atlanta with June’s supplies and Everett’s pistol, bickering their way south while Demon anxiously tracks his own withdrawal clock. They reach a decaying neighborhood and find the listed house empty; a neighbor says the occupants were driven out after violence and suggests they moved to a “brand-new” house nearby.

The “new” house is an unfurnished drug-and-sex setup: a scale, cocaine dust, a man slumped on the floor, and two small children left on pizza boxes. In the next room Demon and June find Emmy and another girl passed out and half-dressed, with Emmy bruised and alarmingly thin. Demon lifts Emmy and they escape to the car, racing away.

June stops on the highway shoulder to examine Emmy, then they head home. As Demon’s withdrawal worsens, June tends to him too and talks quietly: she once knew Demon’s mother and father, helped her live with the Peggots, and explains Demon’s father died at Devil’s Bathtub from a high dive that ended in drowning/broken neck. June urges Demon to get clean for the coming baby and mentions a new treatment she hopes to offer soon—Suboxone—while insisting the system “did this” to them. After dark they return, but Demon—desperate and unstable—uses the stash in his glove box before driving back to Dori.
