Overview

Donald’s attempt to reach a final vantage point over Helen’s silo ends in failure when Thurman and his men recapture him on the surface and force him back into Silo 1. Thurman’s personal presence underscores how seriously Donald’s rebellion threatens the system, while the sedation restores the old order’s control. Donald’s last thoughts reveal that, despite his defeat, he still fears what might happen if the sleepers and hidden machines are ever activated again.

Summary

Donald is seized on the surface just after reaching the hill from which he wanted to look toward Helen’s silo. Terrified and furious at being touched, Donald fights wildly, but several men overpower him and drag him back down the slope, away from the place he had reached.

When Donald manages to turn and face them, he sees that Thurman is there in person, standing in the storm in white coveralls and ordering that it is time to go. Donald keeps resisting, yelling and clawing at the ground for purchase, but the group continues hauling him back toward Silo 1. His struggle only injures him further as his helmet slams against the dirt and his fingernails bend and break.

Once Donald is exhausted, the men carry him through the airlock, where others are waiting. Before the outer door has fully shut, Donald’s helmet is removed and Thurman watches from a distance as they strip off the suit. Donald has managed to kick Thurman hard enough to bloody his nose, but the small act changes nothing.

Erskine and Dr. Henson are present, both winded from the effort. As soon as the suit is off, Dr. Henson injects Donald with a sedative while Erskine holds his hand and seems genuinely sorry. As Donald loses consciousness, he hears someone call the whole affair a waste and dimly registers Erskine saying that someone like Donald would be better in charge. Donald then welcomes the darkness, thinking of his sister and the drones under their tarps, and hoping they will never be awakened.
