Overview
Mission joins Morgan and other porters in a covert nighttime strike against farmers who are illegally lowering a generator through the stairwell to avoid paying for porter labor. As Mission cuts the rope and sends the load crashing, the chapter turns the silo's simmering labor tensions into direct violence.
At the same time, Mission's thoughts about Jenine and his own illegal birth deepen his sense that he now wants to live, even within a system built on harsh rules and sacrifice. The chapter ties personal awakening to widening social conflict, showing Mission being pulled fully into both.
Summary
Later that night, Mission lies in the silo's dim-time remembering Jenine's touch and hearing her warning to stay safe. Hidden with a gang of porters on the stairs, Mission waits in silence for the signal to act while listening to the telltale chirp of a taut rope under strain. As he waits, Mission thinks about the secret ledger in Dispatch that tracks suspicious deliveries such as rope, pipe, brass, and chemicals, because porters know that too much of those materials can signal dangerous or illicit activity.
The porters are staging an ambush because a group of farmers is secretly using rope to lower a heavy generator through the stairwell, doing porter work themselves to save money. Morgan, Mission's old caster, directs the operation and holds Mission back until the right moment. Mission grips his porter knife and reflects on how strange the silo's rules are: a person may destroy his own life without much notice, but crossing job boundaries draws punishment.
While the generator inches downward in the dark, Mission's fear sharpens into self-awareness. He thinks about his neck scar from rope, his earlier wish to die, and the new desire to stay alive after growing close to Jenine. He also remembers the story of his own illegal birth: his mother's failed birth-control implant, her decision to hide the pregnancy, and the Pact's rule that once the pregnancy passed a certain point, Mission lived while his mother was sent outside.
When Morgan finally gives the order, Mission leans out over the rail, finds the taut rope, and cuts into it with his knife. After the first strands snap, Mission saws the rest through, sending the generator plunging below with a crash and cries of alarm. At the same time, fighting erupts above, and Mission rushes up the stairs to join the melee as the dispute over forbidden work turns into open violence.
