After encountering a tormented Jason double in the corridor, Jason targets home and lands at the power plant in a pandemic-ravaged Chicago. He finds Daniela dying and their son dead; he mercy-kills Daniela with morphine, then escapes a military pursuit back into the box. In a tranquil forest world, Amanda frames Jason’s subconscious fears as steering their outcomes, and Jason resolves to meticulously define his real Chicago to find it.
Summary
Amanda writes a focused intention and opens the box to a breathtaking, futuristic Chicago. They savor the marvels—maglev-like trains, a towering “Glass Tower,” and a transformed skyline—confirming that deliberate, written focus can guide their destination. Despite the allure, Jason’s longing for his family resurfaces.
Back in the corridor, they hear impossible footsteps and encounter a naked, blood-smeared Jason double stumbling past, traumatized. Shaken, Jason writes, “I want to go home,” and they arrive at the abandoned South Chicago power plant where his abduction began, suggesting they can target specific places tied to intention.
They explore the city and find it eerily empty: curfews, National Guard, and CDC alerts reveal a deadly contagion. At Jason’s house, Daniela is hemorrhaging and dying; she says a version of Jason died a week ago and that their son lies dead upstairs. Soldiers provide morphine and a mask, warning there is no cure and urging him not to touch her. Jason, devastated, grants Daniela a painless death with auto-injectors, covers her body, and leaves, torn between love and survival.
Attempting to flee, they are pursued by SUVs, Humvees, and a helicopter. Jason evades them through darkened streets and rams into the power plant gates. Under gunfire and laser sights, they sprint to the box and slam the door, escaping as bullets strike the hull. Inside the corridor, Jason finally breaks down; Amanda comforts him.
They awaken in a quiet pine forest world. Amanda cleans his wounded ear and challenges Jason to see how his subconscious—particularly his fear of losing family to illness rooted in his mother’s death—likely steered them to the pandemic reality. They agree to continue together. Jason begins meticulously writing intimate details of his true Chicago—home quirks, neighborhood sounds, and routines—to better align intention with the exact world he seeks.
