Prologue: Enva
Overview
Enva prepares for the inevitable return of Dacre, the former lover and divine she once bound beneath the earth with a year-long song. As she moves through a modern city that has changed while she has not, she feels both the weakening of her ancient spell and the personal cost of the power she used. The chapter establishes Dacre's looming threat, Enva's history with him, and her determination to confront what is coming.
Summary
Enva reflects that she has always known Dacre would eventually come for her. Long ago, she sang a powerful lullaby over his grave for an entire year, sacrificing greatly to bind him beneath the earth for centuries in mortal time. She had trusted that the spell was strong enough to keep Dacre buried, and she had never feared the waking of the other three divines.
Now, however, Enva recognizes that every song loses power and every enchantment ends. Dacre will rise again, and she intends to be there when he does. What troubles her is not that the spell is failing, but the physical toll of having absorbed so much power, which has left her body aching.
Standing unnoticed in the shadows on Broad Street, Enva watches mortals move past her and notes how easily she disappears among them. She waits for sunset before crossing to a café that feels deeply familiar, a place she believes she knew long before the modern city existed around it.
The location stirs memories of the distant past, when Enva lived with Dacre below and felt trapped in his world. She remembers his possessiveness and the loneliness of that life, contrasting it with the freedom she won by escaping him. Those memories tempt her backward, but Enva resists dwelling on them.
After entering the closed café with ease, Enva studies how much the place has changed while she herself has remained essentially the same. Refocusing on her purpose, she sharpens her senses and moves deeper inside, searching for a particular door.
