22. Evanesce into Smoke
Overview
Roman discovers Iris in the ley-line house, but instead of turning her in, he helps her escape. Their brief reunion confirms that his memory is damaged rather than erased: he recognizes her importance in fragments, and Iris finally tells him that she is his wife.
The chapter deepens the tragedy between them by bringing them physically together while leaving them emotionally divided by war, duty, and lost memory. Roman's promise to find Iris again, along with his decision to keep her wedding ring, reestablishes their bond as a central force moving the story forward.
Summary
Iris lowers her wrench when she realizes the soldier who has found her is Roman. Shock gives way to grief as she studies how changed he looks and recognizes his guarded reserve. Both of them stay quiet while voices and orders sound from below, confirming the danger is immediate and that Iris may be discovered at any moment.
When Roman finally speaks, he asks whether Iris has a way to escape, and she explains that a car is waiting and she planned to climb out the window. Roman opens the window, checks the drop, and calmly guides her toward the safest route. Iris is pained by his distance and concludes that he does not truly remember her, but when she asks why he is helping her, Roman admits he has dreamt of her and knows she mattered to him somehow.
Their conversation shifts when Roman asks whether they were friends or enemies before the war. Iris tells him they were never enemies and, after a difficult pause, reveals the truth: she is his wife. The revelation visibly shakes Roman, but instead of rejecting her, he catches her as she nearly falls from the windowsill and touches both her hand and wedding band, showing that the truth reaches him even through his fractured memory.
For a moment, the space between them fills with recognition and longing, and Roman begins to respond to her by name. Gunshots in the distance break the moment and remind Iris that she must escape. She asks Roman to come with her, but after a visible internal struggle he refuses, saying he needs to stay where he is.
Roman makes Iris look at him and swears that he will find her again when the time is right. He also mentions a favor he owes her, hinting at forgotten history between them, but an officer calls for him from the stairwell before he can explain. Realizing there is no more time, Iris removes her wedding ring and gives it to Roman as a token to remember her by, and then she drops into the darkness to flee.
