Chapter 33
Overview
Isabelle endures brutal Gestapo interrogation by Rittmeister Schmidt and is left naked and bound in a freezing refrigerator, fighting panic and the fear of dying before she can protect her network. In Carriveau, Vianne sees escalating Nazi terror, hears of the massacre at Oradour-sur-Glane, and learns from her repentant father that Isabelle has been imprisoned in Girot.
Julien Rossignol’s farewell suggests he will sacrifice himself to try to save Isabelle, while Von Richter corners Vianne about Daniel’s identity. To keep Daniel from being taken, Vianne is coerced into submitting to Von Richter, raising the personal stakes of her resistance and survival.
Summary
Isabelle wakes bound to a chair in a Gestapo cell under a single lightbulb, facing interrogation by Rittmeister Schmidt, the Gestapo commandant in Amboise. Isabelle realizes the key is to survive forty-eight hours without revealing names so her network can vanish, but Schmidt beats Isabelle repeatedly and demands the identity of “the Nightingale.” Isabelle insists Isabelle is “Juliette Gervaise,” refusing to confirm anything about the resistance.
After the beating, Isabelle regains consciousness in total darkness, still tied, in intense cold. Isabelle discovers Isabelle is naked and trapped with a humming motor—inside a refrigerator. Panicking, Isabelle struggles against the restraints, then cries as tears freeze on Isabelle’s face, thinking of the people Isabelle loves and silently saying Vianne’s name as a prayer and farewell.
The scene shifts to Carriveau, where Vianne walks through a town square filled with dead French partisans hanging from streetlamps. At the butcher shop, Vianne hears rumors of escalating Nazi retaliation, including news that the village of Oradour-sur-Glane was annihilated when Nazis herded townspeople into the church and burned it after shootings.
Vianne is pulled into an alley by her father, Julien Rossignol, now aged and broken by war. In an abandoned cottage, Julien apologizes for being a terrible father and reveals that Isabelle has been arrested and imprisoned in Girot for aiding the enemy. Julien insists Vianne must stay in Carriveau to protect Sophie and to be there for Isabelle afterward, then gives Vianne an envelope addressed to both sisters and leaves, implying Julien intends to sacrifice himself to try to save Isabelle; Vianne finally tells Julien she loves him.
Back home, Vianne finds Von Richter waiting and immediately senses danger. Von Richter reveals he has checked records and knows Vianne had only one child with Antoine, demanding the truth about Daniel. When Vianne lies that Daniel is adopted family, Von Richter threatens Daniel’s safety and coerces Vianne with an ultimatum; to keep Daniel, Vianne submits to Von Richter’s sexual assault, enduring it silently for the children’s sake.
