Chapter 30

Overview

Isabelle and Gaëtan learn the Free Zone is over as Germany occupies all of France, making Isabelle’s escape-line work even riskier. At the safe house, Isabelle hears that Vianne is alive but under tighter German scrutiny, while Gaëtan decides to leave courier work and join partisan sabotage with explosives.

In Carriveau, Vianne crosses a line into active resistance by securing blank identity papers from Henri, narrowly avoiding Von Richter’s suspicion. She begins forging documents for hidden children and creates secret records meant to restore their true identities after the war.

Summary

Isabelle and Gaëtan leave Brantôme by train for Bayonne and immediately notice an unusual crush of German soldiers. A roadblock confirms why: a sentry tells them there is “no more Free Zone” because Germany is taking over all of France, raising the danger for Isabelle’s courier work. They push on to the coast and then toward the Pyrenees, the silence between them sharpened by what they both fear about the future.

In Urrugne, they reach the cottage safe house run by Madame Babineau, where three RAF pilots and one American flier wait for a guide named Eduardo to lead them over the mountains. Isabelle delivers overdue money and learns from Madame that one airman is a troublemaker who resents women taking charge. Madame also gives Isabelle a note from Henri warning that Vianne survived German questioning but now has new German billeting, and Isabelle burns the message to protect Vianne.

Late that night, Isabelle slips outside and Gaëtan follows, holding her and revealing what has been weighing on him. Gaëtan tells Isabelle he is leaving Paul’s resistance group to fight as a guerrilla partisan using guns and explosives, meaning he may not see Isabelle for a long time. Facing the possibility of permanent separation, Isabelle asks Gaëtan to make love to her, as if it may be their last night together.

The scene shifts to Carriveau, where Vianne, risking exposure, goes to the Hôtel Bellevue to find Henri and request blank identity papers for a Jewish child in hiding. Henri warns her that Sturmbannführer Von Richter—now billeted at Vianne’s home—is vindictive and dangerous, but agrees to obtain blank papers and tells Vianne she must learn to forge them herself. Vianne leaves determined to keep Isabelle unaware of her new role, even as Henri notes Isabelle would be proud.

Later, Henri discreetly hands Vianne a baguette with the blank papers hidden inside and offers future help as Vianne hints she may need more for “hungry children.” Von Richter then intercepts Vianne, insists on escorting her, and takes her basket; Vianne panics as the baguette nearly shows, but feigns illness and coughing so Von Richter angrily thrusts the basket back and leaves. That night, Vianne studies her own documents, practices forging, and creates a new birth certificate for Jean Georges, renaming him Emile Duvall; she also writes and plans to hide linked records that can later reunite Ari (“Daniel”) and Jean Georges with their real identities and families, leaving a final fiche with Mother at the abbey.
